My wife and I just finished watching the movie "North Face". This is a German made movie with English Subtitles about an attempt to climb the North Face of the Eiger before World War Two.

Having done quite a bit of Rock, Ice and Mountain Climbing in the eighties I found this to be interesting. Having climbed such places as the Monch and the West Wall of the Eiger it was even more interesting.

On the wall above my desk is a Medium Sized Cam Nut. The Caribenar attached to it is bent out of shape. (It's more of a "C" Shape than a closed "D" Shape. The Gate is stripped out.)

After watching the movie my wife looked at this and asked me about it. I had to explain to her about it.

I was doing a lead climb near Bingen in Germany. The climb was a face climb with a bit of a crack. The climb was some 300 feet.

The crack wasn't large, maybe half an inch wide but it was a couple of inches deep. I was putting in safeties every few feet and everything was looking good.

I was able to put in the cam at about 60 feet from the top. Above that it was Chock Nuts. The face had changed a bit as well. The face seemed to lean back a bit and it bulged. The rock also changed from the granite to a softer sandstone type rock.

I was maybe ten feet freom the top when Shit Happened. One of my handholds crumbled and I started heading down. I slid down the bulge and watched as the safeties I had placed popped out one after the other. (Oh Shit) When I slid off the bulge I started dropping free and was finally jerked to a stop. I had fallen some 100 feet before being brought to a stop. (Oh that hurt believe me.) I hung in my harness for a bit cursing like Mickey Mouse before I got my mind together enough to swing back to the face.

I finished leading the climb even though it hurt like a bastard. (I had no choice in the matter.) As my partner followed me up the face he cursed me for being insane even as he pocketed the Cam.

My wife shivered as she listened to this.

Not being enamored of heights, that gave me the willies just reading about it.

The Fates had other plans for you, cat. ;)

When I read the title, I thought this thread was going to be about Iron Man 2.

Would you believe I dislike ladders with a great loathing?
