What a difference a title makes!

I have two stories in the Humour & Satire category, and both were written for contests.

Four Get Naked (& Knackered) was a Nude Day story. It's had 22,216 views!!! (58 votes and a score of 4.17 - my lowest).

Santa's Dungeon was for the Holiday Contest. It's had just 3,317 views! (But 49 votes and a score of 4.71 - my second highest).

Santa's Dungeon is a MUCH better story than the other one, in my opinion (and the score does reflect this), but it's had relatively few views. It's obvious, from those figures, that a "smutty" title really pulls in the readers. The title of Santa's Dungeon might have put some off from reading it. Maybe they thought it wouldn't be hot. But, I think it's VERY hot in places, and much more so that the other one (which was a bit of a turkey, I must admit - it was my "lame" entry, next to my much more serious effort for the Nude Day contest: Public Humiliation).

Did Four Get Naked (& Knackered) grab them as a title, then they back-clicked, because it didn't live up to expectations (it has a MUCH lower read:vote ratio than Santa's Dungeon)? Santa's Dungeon appears to have had the opposite effect; MANY more of those who went to read it were pleasantly surprised and stuck around and voted on it.

Ok, I'm rambling now, but I thought that was interesting!

The descriptions on mine tend to draw more views also.

I'm currently working on a story with a friend. We're doing an incest/anal story... should get a few reads lol

I loved both your stories Lou, but do agree, Santa's Dungeon is unforgettable for many reasons. I can see why that is the clear winner.

:p

Hi Lou, it was a good title but I was kinda scared to read it. I mean I knew you were a good author and had read some of your other stuff but I wasn't sure what all might happen if I went in your dungeon ................ story. So from someone who usually avoids dungeon/basement type stories I don't know if the title really pulled me in and tied me down, so to speak, but the cute and lovable cupcake and other characters along with your superb writing were what convinced me to give it a 5. I don't think I read the other one so I can't comment on it.

Thanks, Lisa!

That's a great insight. I did wonder if the "Dungeon" might put some off. It isn't hardcore BDSM, by any stretch of the imagination - just a little spanking, a rack and a touch of ice-play. :D

But, yes, I can certainly see where you're coming from. Thanks for the great comments, too!

I think it's the season. At this time of the year, I think people are looking for stories with more sentimental or emotional value. Other holidays don't bring the same impact of emotional desire and it is my feeling that this is the only reason Santa's Dungeon did not get as many views. :)

Just a thought.

And I think it's a very good thought. There could well be something in that. I guess not everyone has a one-track, feelthy mind, no matter the time of year. ;)

But, seriously, it is very understandable that people might want that.

Thanks for your input!

I was ignorant to the effect of titles and descriptions until my story "The Novice" with the description "Audrey discovers lust sin and seduction" or something similiar in the non-consent category. Admittedly, it wasn't my description - laurel or manu or someone changed it (and I'm forever thankful! :D).

I have (quite :D) a few stories in this category, and but I would consider this one my most successful by far as it has just over 65k views, 330 votes and 45 pcs. The others do not come close in comparison (although I'm sure this doesn't even begin to stack up to stories in the incest category!)

Since then, I've been very conscious of the importance of title and description - but still haven't figured out what works and what doesn't! There is a whole psychology subject in there somewhere!

I have to admit, Four get Knackered is a VERY catchy title - I love it! Santa's Dungeon doesn't appeal much, but remember I would also be relying on descriptions. I don't think it is the "dungeon" that is off-putting, it just isn't as catchy :D

titles/descriptions kill me

I write the story first, then the title and don't even think about the description till I'm submitting it. And by then, I've run out of any semblance of creativity. Most successful story I had in terms of votes-per-views and feedback just happened to be the first story on the first page of the new stories section. If only to get the rest of them there.

I know my titles and descriptions suck. Votes are pretty good in terms of scores, but even if I were going through, I'm not sure I'd read mine based on the title or the description.

OH MY GOD! Becareful what you say here Lou, remember it makes you a target if you say you have a high score on a story.

Too true. The score on that story has been up and down like a yoyo. To be quite honest, though, I'm past caring. I feel sorry for those sad, insecure individuals. Especially at Christmas. It's ok, though, cos Santa knows. ;)
