What’s the best way to avoid marks and/or bruise?

Are some devices better for avoiding mark and bruises?
Is there anything you can do before, during, or after to reduce their visibility?
Are some body parts more likely to mark than others are?

Can most people tell when something ‘feels’ like it’s going to leave a mark?

I am waiting

to see some responses here, Never.

It looks like I will be traveling up north in the next 2 months to see "someone" ~smiling~ and I would like to know the answers to this question. He does so like to use his belt.......

(Am I crazy? traveling north in November?)

I love to leave my mark...generally where it will not show.

However, having marks is not the best thing in some social situations if they do show.

The use of Capsaicin .075% creme (used for arthritis) may help the marks to disappear faster. That , hot compresses and time.

I think only experimentation will tell you when a certain instrument or force will leave a mark as each person has different skin qualities.

Try taking a vitamin "K" supplement, (you get this by exposing yourself to sunlight also), it reduces the severity of marks showing up on your skin, (busted capillaries etc.).

Aspirin appears to increase the liklihood of visible marks also. Just my .02 cents worth.:rose:

I would assume that a broader surface, like a paddle, would leave less of a mark because the force would be dispersed over a wider area. I’d also think that warming the area beforehand would help, as well as doing stretches before and after.

Nevertheless, I don’t know.

So, Capsaicin .075% crème, Vitamin K, and hot compresses help.
Any other suggestions?

Anything that increases blood flow to an affected area *after* play will tend to dissipate the discoloration. :rose:

Most subs wear their marks with pride. You just have leave them in places where they wont be seen. If you are married and fucking around, it's a problem and there is little that can be done to make that kind of play safe. If I had to pick something to use it would be a flogger.

That’s a good general guideline to keep in mind. Thank you artful.

Not everyone who enjoys that type of play considers themselves a sub, and some people find markings unattractive.

That said, why would you recommend a flogger?

Umm,
I’ve never used it for this, but for my little boy when he bangs himself up i use either a 9% lavender oil (lavender in a carrier like jojoba or olive oil) or hot/cold therapy (20 min of each rotating). The lavender is for the smaller things and the hot/cold therapy is for like when im clumsy and falls down the stairs. Hope it helps. oh soaking in Epsom’s salts dissolved in warm water might help.

It depends on the type of flogger. Some have a thuddy feel and don't generally leave marks unless there is end wrap. End wrap is when the tails go past the target area and wrap around a curved part of your body. Of course, anything will mark if you hit hard enough.

The only time I had marks that lasted more than a day were from a particularly heavy spanking that left my ass bruised black and blue for more than a week.

I never went out with that Dom again.

Personaly I find leather leaves less marks if any and the more you play the skin adaps and does'nt mark so easily.Like the others have said good long warmups!...lillum:)

Using ice right away afterward helps... then switching to heat after 24 hours.

Also, conditioning your skin and underlying tissue helps. I've heard rolling a rolling pin up and down the area you want to condition helps. Start out soft, then work up to doing it very hard.

I am one of those with pale skin smattered with freckles, I bruise easily....no matter what. I also tend to be bright red at first and turn bluer on the second day instead unless bruised deeply.

As for what was said previously...I did/do wear them with pride, neatly under my clothes as He intended...hopefully again in the future, given the right circumstances...

I think so people are going to show no matter what. Just like ther are some people that never show. :)

Oh my <raised eyebrows>! :) Thank you.

PBW "Head swelling up..."

It seems like PBW and Art are contradicting each other. Artful says that we should increase blood flow to the affected area (i.e., heat) immediately after the trauma, whereas PBW thinks ice is best for the first 24 hours. I, for one, agree with PBW. Wait until the immediate trauma is past, and then use heat the next day in order to flush out the dead cells with increased blood flow.

On that note, here are links to two past threads on this subject:

I will refrain from asking which head of PB’s is swelling, though I suspect they both are.

PB, I’m interested in your rolling pin idea. Are you actually strengthening the capillaries, or the tissue around them?

Well, I've only tried this on my shins. I think it strengths the tissue (muscle) while at the same time improving the blood flow. This method might only be better for broad striking objects, rather than smaller things. I'm also not exactly sure how well this will do on soft tissue areas (buttocks). I only used it on areas with bones under muscle... forearms, shins, thighs.

Sorry I don't have more info.

Edit: Btw... only one head swelled... the other got it's "swelling" earlier tonight. LOL. Apple a day keeps the doctor away... except I replace an apple with ..uhm... well... nevermind :)

I also seem to recall that some girls who were getting hickeys back before I really knew what those things even were used to swear by toothpaste. Apparently, you apply it to the bruise immediately after the trauma, and it 'cools' the skin and tightens it. I'm not sure whether this is actually scientifically valid, but it seems like an interesting sensation, anyway, without all the drippiness of ice.

I am in no way contradicting what PBW said,...in fact,...I agree with his statement. It is a *routine* that most people use on bruises and light skin discolorations. What I posted earlier was:

Anything that increases blood flow to an affected area *after* play will tend to
dissipate the discoloration.

**************************************************
NOT immediately-tyvm. :D

The other treatment I've heard of is alternately heating and cooling the affected area. This would be apply ice for 20 mins and then applying heat for 20 mins. However, I've only heard of this treatment for sports injuries where the person needs to get back into the game. Or needs to do the activity again in a short period of time or the next day. For example, if you sprained your ankle in the evening and needed to play again in the morning. I've also heard this is not a recommended treatment for sprains and such. So... take it with a grain of salt. I would think it would be good for endurance athletes that have very sore muscles and need to be able to go again the next day...

I would still say ice in the first 24 hours then heat. Also, elevating the area during the first 24 hours. If that is possible <grin>. IF there is pain, ibuprofin (sp?) is best. At most you want to take 800 mg every 4 to 6 hours.

And invest in a long sleeve turtle neck and jeans :)

WD-40 works wonders. It is greazy and nasty smelling, but when rubbed into the skin, not only reduces the spread of subdural hematoma but acts to stop the spread of arthritis as well.

Whoops -- sorry to have misconstrued you, Artful! Thanks for clearing it up.

And rosco, how would WD-40 work? I thought it was primarily a cleaner.
