It was the second half of the game and still no team had scored. Westingham Slingers in their red shirts and black shorts. The rival team was Dallas Scouts in blue and white. The game was even when Jerry Droeven of the scouts ran free on the slingers side of the pitch. The pass from Mike Wallace was perfect and Jerry's foot met the ball in a volley that almost caught the slingers goalkeeper by surprise. Steven Zane made a save that would make him the hero of the day.
Lucas Kane watched his team from the sideline. The frustration of not being out there was evident on his face. Almost thirty minutes of the second half was over and still the coach had not sent him out there. His injured knee felt better but the coach just wanted to be on the safe side and not make it any worse.
He watched Nathan dribble past one, then two defenders and finally passing the ball to James. James ran towards the goal but before he was able to shoot he was tackled and fell hard to the ground. It was just what Lucas had waited for. The coach told him to go out there. The time showed on 79 minutes. Only eleven minutes plus overtime left.
He ran over to Nathan and patted his friend on the back. They exchanged a smile. The referee blow the whistle and the game was on again. Even as Lucas hoped that James was not seriously hurt he was thrilled about being out, where the action was. It was not for him to be at the sidelines watching. He was meant to play football.
