Beyond Parody: Wesleyan University Thinks LGBT Acronym Not Inclusive Enough, Now Uses LGBTTQQFAGPBDSM…

Wesleyan

For ther record, LGBTTQQFAGPBDSM = “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Queer, Questioning, Flexual, Asexual, Genderfuck, Polyamourous, Bondage/Disciple, Dominance/Submission, Sadism/Masochism”

Via College Fix:

Slippery slope, anyone?

As Professor Steven Hayward cleverly points out in his “50 Shades of Gay” post at Power Line (great headline, by the way), Wesleyan University is now making sure every sexual fetish, whim, kink, orientation, impulse and desire – plus the kitchen sink – gets its own capital letter in the ever-growing acronym of the formerly Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer community.

Wesleyan University’s residential life division’s “Open House” at 154 Church Street boasts, according to the university’s website: “a safe space for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Queer, Questioning, Flexual, Asexual, Genderfuck, Polyamourous, Bondage/Disciple, Dominance/Submission, Sadism/Masochism (LGBTTQQFAGPBDSM) communities and for people of sexually or gender dissident communities. The goals of Open House include generating interest in a celebration of queer life from the social to the political to the academic. Open House works to create a Wesleyan community that appreciates the variety and vivacity of gender, sex and sexuality.”

Why am I responding to this? I must be a glutton for punishment...

As far as I'm aware, it's been LGBTQA for a while now, with a little bit of discussion as for what the 'Q' and 'A' stand for. (Queer/Questioning, Ally/Asexual) But if you start the acronym with 'LGBT', people will generally know what you are talking about, so...

crazy loonz

Now you're in a bind, busybody. If you're consistent, you will have to use the new acronym every time you make a reference. Better memorize it.

its very simple

look between your leg

if there is a THING there=MALE

if there isn't a THING there=FEMALE

if you cant figure it out=NUT JOB:cool:

DEMOCRATS sums it up, and includes every combination and permutation known to freakdom.

Who needs nuance when you have Busybody?
I do think it's silly, though. Why name check all those specific identities, many of which overlap anyway, and then give a catch-all summary at the end? Websites for motoring enthusiasts don't say 'For lovers of Fords, Alfas, Astons, Cadillacs...' It's implied.

In a few years child molesters will added to that list. Why should they be left out?

There's this big hubbub in certain discussion circles about "erasure". Like, did you know that Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen was bisexual? Every time he is referred to as "gay" "queer" or "homosexual", some people see it as "bi erasure". Personally, I'm really liberal minded about the entire thing. Gay is enough of an identifier in my book, because it is very broad and identifies who we're talking about as being "not hetero". Any specifications that need to be made, can then be made when asked for, like homo, asexual, pan, bi, etc. I identify as pan with asexual leanings(I find everyone attractive with no real generalized standard for my arousal, but I prefer romantic relationships than sexual ones) and I'm genderfluid. I do not consider it erasure to call me "homosexual" or "gay" but the labels "hetero" and "cis" are definitely not the right ones, even though I sometimes identify as my born gender and have relationships with the opposite sex. To make it all inclusive seems a bit narcissistic in my book and lacking in compromise. Like if I go to a "gay pride" parade with my opposite gendered partner, would I be isolated and told that I can't be there? THAT'S erasure. Of allies, of pans, of asexes, of everything and it's not solved by making sure we name everybody in the group in the title. It's awareness of alternate sexualities and gender identities and we need to remember that.

Exactly, and very well put. The phrase they used at the end: 'for people of sexually or gender dissident communities' - seems to fit perfectly well for all those described. Why not simply use that? Seems to me these labels are too rigid to be useful, will always leave some people feeling that they are slipping through the gaps, and can be too easily used as a stick to beat the basically well-intentioned but not quite so PC over the head with. I've encountered a lot of that at college. 'Don't you dare use the word 'trans' unless you've been on a week-long training course!' - you know the sort of thing.
