I was never spanked and considering I was a child in the sixties, that was rare. It wasn't that my parents were opposed to spanking their kids, though. They weren't trying to make a statement about to spank or not. I think it was just because I was the fourth out of four children and they were just kinda tired.

My Dad used a belt and a paddle once in awhile, especially when I was younger. I recall mouthing off to my Mother and she slapped me right across the cheek. My pride was hurt more than anything. I learned to keep my mouth shut.

Wow, this is interesting...I was never spanked. My parents didn't believe in it -- felt any type of corporal punishment for children was not an appropriate way to teach a child that they'd done something "wrong." They never yelled, screamed or raised their voices at us either (except on some incredibly rare occasions -- and I think it was more in reaction to us getting into our teens and starting to yell ourselves, lol!) Rather enlightened of them since I was a child of the late 60's and my parents were in their 30's when they had me (and I'm the oldest -- meaning my folks grew up in the 30's and 40's).

I don't have kids but I feel the same way.

However, it hasn't stopped me from enjoying being spanked as part of a little bedroom play.

but when we were, usually they would swat me with their hands, once I think my father used his belt - but he barely smacked me with it, so actually it hurt less than the hands.

Yes. And my children have a very good excperience, they will look back at their childhood as a joy. They are secure and emotionally healthy. I cannot look back at my childhood with even a smile.

For whoever said that the spankings/beatings taught them to be good so as to avoid them, well, that didn't do me a bit of good. I didn't have to do anything other than be the smaller, weaker person than her. She wasn't teaching, she was taking her frustrations out on someone she knew she could do whatever she wanted to. All she taught me was what a big damn bully she was.....and the realization that I would one day be one hell of a mother, and I am.

I'm sure I was swatted many times. I only remember being hit with anything other than a hand one time... my mom broke a wooden spoon over my leg.

My sisters got the flyswatter a lot, and grammas favorite swatter was one of those bread boards that's got a handle on it. She had it hanging on her kitchen wall with a sign over it that said 'The Clobberer'. All the woman had to do was look at it, and us kids scattered.

Kind of off topic, but I think there's a vast difference between a spanking and a beating. I've never injured my children, never given them more than a swat on their butt after telling them that if they didn't stop what they were doing, I was going to swat them, or smacking their hand to keep them from touching those pretty blue flames on the stove. I will never pick up an object to hit them with.
