*Ponzi: Treasury Issues $1T in New Debt in 8 Weeks—To Pay Old Debt

November 28, 2014 - 2:37 PM

By Terence P. Jeffrey

The Daily Treasury Statement that was released Wednesday afternoon as Americans were preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving revealed that the U.S. Treasury has been forced to issue $1,040,965,000,000 in new debt since fiscal 2015 started just eight weeks ago in order to raise the money to pay off Treasury securities that were maturing and to cover new deficit spending by the government.

During those eight weeks, Treasury took in $341,591,000,000 in revenues. That was a record for the period between Oct. 1 and Nov. 25. But that record $341,591,000,000 in revenues was not enough to finance ongoing government spending let alone pay off old debt that matured.

The average maturity of the debt instruments held by the treasury is about 6 years. So, on average, the entire debt is turned over every six years. That's one of the reasons interest rates have such a big impact on the economy.

We need to start paying Congresspeople for piecework rather than salary. And only slightly above minimum wage, too.

That would be nice.

Remember what the looting looked like in Furgeson the other day? That's what it looks like at treasury after the Democrats take over.

I know!! Do the republican thing and cut taxes!!!

 fucking morons.

The deficit as a percentage of GDP is lower now than it was before the economy tanked.

BTW, it's FERGUSON.

I agree.
But there are too many who live their life in debt and know nothing else. We will just continue stealing from our kids and grand kids.
Not even a kids piggy bank is safe.

It would be safer if the idiots on the RW would just raise taxes on those who have it and get some bills paid....

oh wait I forgot, worship the rich and steal from the grand kids piggy bank instead...they shouldn't have to contribute to the society that made them what they are right?

Cut taxes for the rich and borrow moar from China on the backs of the grandkids of the poor and vanishing middle class...Vote republican!! Because that's the conservative way, so much personal responsibility. ;)

One party is the same as the other. Neither party has gone a single year without borrowing more money than they did the year before.
When democrats are in power they want to increase the debt and the republicans fight them.
When the republicans are in power they want to increase the debt and the democrats fight them.
They both use the same excuses, just trade places.
The voters seem to forget about what their party did when in power.

We need to learn to live on the amount of taxes we bring in. Stop both parties from borrowing.

The democrats have, in fact I believe under Obama only one year did we borrow more than the year before but I'll have to go check that. And as much as it hurts to say Bush had something resembling an excuse.

They do not trade places. The same people make the same basic arguments every fucking year.

Do you remember what Obama had to say about it when Bush wanted to raise the debt limit?

Yes. And he was wrong. But I don't remember the context, do you?

Yes I do
When Bush wanted to increase the debt Obama said it was a failure of leadership.
But then Obama raised it more than any president in History.
That is just an example of the parties trading placed and those who support the party just skip over to the other side.
The people today who are wanting to stop the borrowing are the same ones that wanted to increase the borrowing when Bush was in office.
The same people who were for not raising the debt limit when Bush was president are now wanting to increase the debt limit.

Both parties are the same. Do people really forget what they were for and against when one person was president and then change 180 degrees when another person is president?

States have budgets too, If the federal government was prevented from mandating the majority of their expenditures in their budgets, these things would be taken care of by them, and we could fire a vast network of unproductive consumers of our wealth in the federal bureaucracy. They could be producing wealth instead of consuming ours.

Why didn't they before? And for that matter why should they be required to or even allowed to? One nation, one standard.

That doesn't show me context but whatever. Obama didn't know any better and now he does. The rest of your stuff is still BS. The Dems have never been the ones talking about lowering taxes or in any serious way cutting spending. They also might have been against raising the debt limit but at the end the end of the day they did it and without running out the clock and damaging the nation as a whole.

You do not know much about history either.
Is there any subject that you know enough about to join in on the discussion?

I'm much better equipped than you are in any subject we've tackled thus far. But I guess it depends who the conversation includes if I know enough to join in.

So far every discussion you have been shows your lack of education and common sense. But then, you wouldn't know that as the people you are around know as little as you do.

Including the overwhelming majority of this board and the people running this country and professionals of whatever fields we discuss. But yes, lack of common sense.
