Wish I really knew linguistics. From my meager attempts, it's quite a difficult subject, mainly because linguistic terminology is so vast. After that, it can move against historical debate re: which languages evolved on their own; which from invaders; which just incorporated borrowed words. Then all that relates to understanding of history, and in some cases reclarifying history. (Couldn't get that far on my own. I'd have to go back to school, but can't.)
