Reading through and posting in the Best British Band thread/poll was so fun, I thought someone besides me might get a kick out of the same thing, west of the Atlantic. The names in the poll were chosen by me so feel free to vote outside of the box and tell me why I made such an egregious oversight. And also, it would be killer if you had some support for your choice.

Oh, and guidelines: lets stick with popular music, and only deal with "bands" in the group sense, not in the singer backed by a band sense (i.e. Parliament Funkadelic counts, James Brown doesn't.)

Question...............

The list?????

Are they your "personal" favorites or what?...because.....WOW....I'm abit speechless

I asked myself to come up with 8 bands that I thought would show up on pretty much any reputable "Best American Band" list. And then I failed myself by only coming up with 7, so I added The New Christy Minstrels as a joke. Some are among my favorites, some aren't, but I certainly enjoy all of the bands represented. Im not sure I understand the source of your surprise...

ouch....my list is so much different

Chicago
Santana
Crosby Stills and Nash
Eagles
Boston
Cream
the Allman brothers
the Commodores
Blood Sweat and Tears
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Three Dog Night

these were off the top of my head and I couldn't drop any of then to come down to eight.......maybe the Allman Brothers.....and that only brought it down to ten.....

Where was my head?????

Grateful Dead
Grand Funk Railroad.....from the title of your thread
and little known(joking).....Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

No offence, but that list is horrible, except for The Ramones. :( There's no Metal band's at all. Also since when did popular equal good? All those boy bands, like Backstreet boy's or Nsinc were popular yet they still sucked.

no list can be complete without Nirvana...only 10 yrs worth of everyone trying to copy what they started speaks for itself

For an old band...

Lynard Skynard

How in the world did they not make your list?

And for something a bit more current...

Alison Krause and Union Station.

Now before you go all balistic, consider that she has won more Grammies than any other woman artist, ever!

:)

Iron Butterfly! The Traveling Wiburys? Of course that was part English. ;)

Hi George!

And a more modern band, The Dave Matthews Band.

with George Harrison the Wilbury's probably don't qualify....

You left off....
Kiss
Aerosmith
Journey
Metallica

Thanks Daizie....I think we are trying to prove there is no way to do this as beauty is in the eye of beholder....:)

just like the other best of Lit polls..........:D

Cream doesn't count in the least: Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker each and every one of them a Brit. Same with Emerson, Lake and Palmer, all Brits. Dave Matthews is South African. Graham Nash and Stephen STills of Crosby, Stills and Nash, are, respectively British and Canadian.

For my money:

Blue Oyster Cult (all of the original members were American, I don't know about the current line-up.)

Aerosmith.

Styx.

Journey.

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Molly Hatchet

Green Day

Black Crows

Gin Blossoms

Atlanta Rhythm Section

The Band

Doobie Brothers

Cheap Trick

Van Halen

Oh,and Carlos Santana is from Mexico.

Agreed. I almost put them on the list, but I think its difficult to argue that a band in the immediate past has the same lasting impact as, say, The Beach Boys. Time will tell, but I think you're right, they belong up there among the other "weather vane" bands like BB, the Velvets, etc.
