Death is always depressing...

Especially violent death in lands far from home...

Keep the flower for the graves yet to come...

My Babyboom generation high school teachers said this same sort of thing before the Gulf War. Raised on the Viet Nam war, all they new was US military failure and a deep hatred of the US military. I had a teacher claim that Iraq would be a bloodbath much worse than Viet Nam that would claim hundreds of thousands of American lives.

Then came the most lopsided war of the 20th century (except perhaps for the Six Days War). We lost less than 100.

But our success was due to the European presence in the coalition, right? ;)

I chalk this thread up to your usual M.O. - wishful thinking.

Not at all, moronboy.

I was simply ridiculing your idiotic, melodramatic posting style.

What's melodramatic about it?

Unless you think nobody's going to have their brains scattered all over the desert in the next few months...

Your flippancy is a sign that you don't think violent death actually happens...

Just the clean ones you see in the movies...

The war in Iraq is going to be fought on the ground and this time you're not chasing the enemy along a desert highway as they scramble to escape the falling bombs and rockets...

You will be fighting against an enemy on their own territory, extremely well dug in and ready to defend their country until the bitter end...

Or don't you believe that either?

This time the war will be against a defending army...

Just like Vietnam...

Do you remember the Gulf War?

It was fought against an enemy on their own territory, extremely well dug in and ready to defend their country until the bitter end...

It didn't work out that way though.

Geography buddy says:

Vietnam. Monsoons, triple canopy jungle, supply lines from 3 different countries supported by the former USSR and China.

Iraq. Wide open desert.

Very similar

PP, the Iraqis were on the defensive in the Gulf War as well. It was recently conquered territory in Kuwait, but it was defensive nevertheless. The US never had to face an Iraqi Offensive.

You're right, though, that this war presents some more difficult problems, especially if regime change becomes the objective and Saddam decides to hunker down with his army in Baghdad. There will be lots of the same problems the US faced in Mogadishu.

So yes, the casualty numbers would be higher, but I don't think any military thinkers anywhere argue about what the ultimate outcome would be. Even if Saddam got really crazy and used chemical or bioweapons on us, the outcome would be a forgone conclusion.

Plus the fact that the Vietnamese people were extremely committed to the idea of independence. The Iraqi people really don't want to fight for Saddam. The moment US troops enter the scene they'll defect in droves. PP's analogy is pretty weak.

This surprises you? ;)

The strategies in Vietnam and the Gulf were also completely different. Really, the biggest thing the two have in common is they are both foreign countries.
