Well this was a hint that it is time for me to move out of my current digs.

I was out in the carport/garage this after noon when I heard a slight thump and some voices out by the road. Curiose I wandered out to see what was going on and found an older woman laying on the ground with a younger one standing over her asking if she was okay. (The younger one turned out to be her grand-daughter.)

I dropped back on my training and did an initial assesment and found her to be just fine. She claimed that her foot had gone out from under her causing her to fall. I was getting ready to help her to her feet when a group of young toughs from the neighborhood showed up and immediatley started commenting about a white man helping a black woman. I must have, in their oppinion, tripped her or knocked her down and they were starting to make noises of retribution. Thankfully the grand-daughter had the presence of mind to hit 911 on her cell phone when she first saw these punks. A cruiser showed up, followed quickly by three more.

It took the police several minutes, as well as the reinforcement from the Sherrifs Dept. to get the punks moved down the street a bit. Only then were things sorted out. One of the local cops thanked me for helping the woman, while one of the Deputies recognised me from after Hurricane Wilma. (He lives down the street and was one of the L.E.O.'s who made frequent early morning stops by my place for coffee right after the storm.)

It took a bit but the punks were calmed down, with the warnings from the deputy that A) I was not the person they really wanted to play with, and B) he was going to be keeping an eye on things and knew where each one of them lived.

The Grandmother after watching all of this commented to me that she was glad she didn't live in this area and was happy to know her daughter was moving out as well. When she heard that I was planning on moving as well her comment wa that she understood completely.

I'm terribly sorry this happened to you, Cat. It's just plain sad how ready some people are to assume the worst.

In this neighborhood I'm just glad there wasn't gunfire. That is not an uncommon occurance in this area. (My wife and I often sit out back and play name that caliber. The most common is not surprisingly the nine millimeter.)

I live in a little corner of West Palm Beach bordered by Riviera Beach to the north and Mangonia Park to the west. Between these two neighborhoods they have more shootings per year than Boston and it's satalite communities including Brockton. Kind of sad really.

Yes it is my friend, yes it is.

What makes it worse in my mind is these are the same ones who are commonly out on the streets claiming rascism. They just can't see that what they are doing is the same thing they claim to be suffering from and hate so much.

This was just down the street.

Murder In Mangonia Park

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Police investigate two overnight shootings that happened at the same apartment complex within hours of each other.

The first happened at Tiffany lakes at about 2:00 Saturday morning.

Police say Marco Boone was shot and died soon after at the hospital.

Hours later, as they investigated that killing, they heard shots come from Boone's apartment.

Corey Kiser was hit with blast from a shotgun.

Police say Boone's brother Jack Philon was arrested for that shooting.

Detectives don't believe the two shootings are connected and at this time cops they don't have a suspect in Boone's murder.

And they complain because they get no respect. I run into a lot of the same thing here. I've been assigned install jobs only to get there and have the people tell me to send a black guy to do the job or forget it.

The black guys I work with find that hilarious. Even they can't believe some people are like that.

Unfortunately I deal with it a lot.

After Hurricane Wilma I grabbed my saw and made my way down the street cutting trees and brush away from homes while clearing driveways and the road. I was verbaly assaulted more than once because I happened to be the wrong race. It was kind of frustrating.

The Taoists knew what they were talking about when they said, "What you resist, you become."

racism compounded by ignorance. *sigh* perhaps one day humanity will learn, but i wouldn't like to bet on it before we fuck up the planet.

So if we resist compassion and understanding the world will be a better place
I knew John Lennon was wrong with all that "Give Peace a Chance" stuff

Scary

I'm not a psychologist, but as far as I can tell, this is all whining passed down from generation to generation. Parents and leaders from a community (any community) who constantly tell their kids that the problems aren't "their" fault, don't realize the damage they do. The punks SeaCat was talking about probably have pretty crappy lives, but the people around them spend all their time talking about how it's all the fault of "white people" (ignoring the fact that some of us work two jobs and still are in as bad shape as they are).

I saw a statistician talking about the illegal immigration problem and it's worse in that community. Many of the people who came across the border in the last 20 years are hard-working, family oriented individuals (often risking their lives to give their kids a better shot). The 2nd generation is a nightmare. In San Diego, the person claimed that 38% of all births to unwed mothers came from children of illegal aliens. The gang and crime problem in that group is exploding. The dropout rate is skyrocketing. Teenagers put massive pressure on others in their community to quit "acting white" and behave like them.

I hate to sound defeatist, but I don't see it getting better. In the African-American neighborhoods around me, many of the kids never have a chance, even after decades of government programs and people trying to help. If the same problem (even worse) is happening among illegals, there's no way to quickly turn it around. I weep for my daughter and the environment she's growing up in. It doesn't seem like the good people (of all races) can do anything to stop the wave of ignorance.

Reading this, then thinking about some of the things I deal with makes me shake my head.

One of my co-workers, upon finding out about the possibility of me getting my own place in the near future confronted me about it. She was quite upset that I could afford to buy my own place while she and her husband, (a computer programmer) couldn't afford to buy a place for themselves.

I explained to her what I was buying and offered to help her find another like it. This got her even more upset. I found myself being accused of trying to keep her and her husband subjugated and oppressed. When I asked her what she meant informed me that it was only the lower classes who would buy a place like that, a place that needed work and had the stigma of being a mobile home.

WTF?

SeaCat, some time ago I read a book about 30s/40s farmers in a poor rural area. One of the characters describes some of the poor farmers: "Too poor to paint and too proud to whitewash." Of course, the combination resulted in nothing getting done. I, at first, wondered if there were really people who were that stupid. As I [and you] find out, there are.

What's worse Richard, they are not only out there but expect us to subsidise them. They, of all races and backgrounds, expect us to give them handouts instead of working for what they want. They seem to feel that they are entitled to these things. They feel that society owes them for some reason.

What is worse in my opinion is that these same people, of all ethnicities, become more than a littel upset when someone drags themselves up and starts to own something. The feel upset when it is suggested that they work for what they want. (My sister and her kids come to mind.) Am I to be looked own upon or hated because I am trying to better myself? It seems so.

I grew up in a very nasty inner city environment. Those who live in such places mostly have only their own despair and that of those about them. If someone attempts to better himself, that person is regarded as an uppity, better-than-you troublemaker. Working for what you want is looked down upon, with the exception of use of artistic or sports talent. There is, in MNTHO, only one way to deal with such people. If you ever happen to be in the South Central and see a guy with a footprint on his face, you can ask him about my theory.
