Laura Bush warns Dems away from anti-Palin sexism

Jonathan Martin
2 hours, 57 minutes ago

First lady Laura Bush said today that sexism aimed at Sarah Palin was a very real prospect and suggested Democrats watch what they say about the Alaska governor and John McCain's ticketmate.

“The other side will have to be particularly careful," Bush said in an interview on Fox News from St. Paul, "because that’s something we all looked at."

Questioned about whether Palin may face sexism from the media in the way Hillary Rodham Clinton supporters claim she did, Bush said: "I think that's a possibility."

The first lady, who had been planning to speak to the GOP convention tonight before Gustav scrambled the schedule, expressed pride in Palin.

"I’m going to get what I wanted, which is to be able to vote for a Republican woman," Bush said. "People, as they get to know her, are going to be so impressed with her grit and her sensible judgment.”
"She has shown how terrific women can be, and how strong women can be, in office.”

Bush and Cindy McCain were to visit a convention breakfast sponsored by the Louisiana delegation this morning.

Sexism is rampant in politics.

I imagine they are intelligent enough to keep it behind the scenes.

Don't slam her for being a beauty queen, use her lack of international experience, for instance.

Don't point to her having five kids (and not staying home with them) as a liability, instead use her lack of education in politics (a minor in political science from Idaho College).

Don't tee hee about her time as a sports broadcaster for local news, instead use the fact that her experience of mayor was for a town of less than 5500 and her experience of governor is of a state numbering only 670,000.

We'll see what happens.

But again, I have to snicker at the conservative attacks.

Notice that Democrats have not begun to attack the fact that Palin is a woman. Yet blogs have already begun to fill with that expectation.

I imagine in a week or so there will be enough talk about this that some people will actually believe she has been attacked, just because the talking points intimate this will soon be happening.

It's quite masterful, really. They certainly know how to the spin an election.

Indeed.

It's funny how the Republicans can go on for decades pissing on single moms and unwed pregnancies but when it happens to one of their own faithful, well now it's distasteful... off limits.

And we'll still have to deal with their attacks on unwed pregnant women after this.

That's
just
MADDENING.

I would say take all the videos of Preachers out there pissing on unwed pregnancies

and play them now.

Their own words right there at the pulpit.

I know!

They snickered when Hillary was treated unfairly but since Palin is a Republican she's off-limits?

Same with unwwed mothers.

Two faced bastids, anyway.

But wait - I knew that already!

:D

My local paper (Obama supporter) is having a whale of a time with Palin. The paper reacts as if Palin and Biden are the Presidential candidates. But their points are aimed at Palin's sex: She should be home with the kids, etc. And the blatant sexism is gonna bite Bambi.

In reality the Vice President has virtually nuthin to do, its almost entirely gilt and ceremony.

Well shit, the Republicans have been going on for ages about how women should be at home with the kids.

It's all about "Do as we say do, not as we do" with them.

It will be interesting to see how the pregnancy of Palin's underage daughter plays in the conservative media, especially considering that fact that if it was OB's daughter, he and Michelle would be getting dragged through the coals for being irresponsible parents who don't know how to raise their daughters.

Especially since they're 7 and 10 years old.

Ok, yeah, I know what you mean. Just wanted to point that out. ;)

From what I read, the usual GOP suspects are characterizing the pregnancy as a 'mistake' (like grabbing the wrong carton of eggs from the cooler) and 'we're all sinners.'

But I dont think it will wash, because most Americans dont want leaders just like us. The Democrats are starving for red meat, and Palin is a wounded doe. America is gonna conclude that Palin needs to keep her ass at home caring for the kiddies. One is already knocked-up, whats next?

But if they feast on that doe, America is still a bunch of hypocrites.

The GOP will be given a sympathy free pass and the Democrats will be accused of being mean spirited.

The way to nail this wounded doe is to run attack ads showing actual video footage of preachers pissing about unwed pregnancies. Preferably right wing preachers seen next to Bush or, worse, standing next to McCain.

Nothing wrong with stabbing Palin with her own sword...

Comments are running against Palin out there. The sense I get is most people think she has her priorities screwed-up. Politically she has become The Show.

I dont think she'll survive the convention. Look for a resignation soon.

Well done, Obama. Take the attack dogs by the throat.

Obama Says Palin Pregnancy “Off Limits”
by Bonney Kapp

Barack Obama addressed a gaggle of reporters this afternoon to discuss the latest goings-on with Hurricane Gustav. After brief opening comments on the much-hyped, overly politicized hurricane, reporters were curious about one thing: 17-year-old Bristol Palin’s pregnancy, made public today.

“I have heard some of the news on this and so let me be a clear as possible: I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people’s families are off limits, and people’s children are especially off limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics,” the Democrat said forcefully. “It has no relevance to Governor Palin’s performance as governor, or her potential performance as a VP. And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories,” he continued.

The candidate who himself was born to a teenage mom, reminded reporters, “You know my mother had me when she was 18, and how a family deals with issues and you know teenage children, that shouldn’t be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that’s off limits.”

When asked about an “unnamed McCain advisor” accusing the Obama campaign of spreading despicable rumors surrounding Bristol Palin online, Obama interrupted the reporter mid-question. “I am offended by that statement. There is no evidence at all that any of this involved us,” he said directly. “Our people were not involved in any way in this, and they will not be. And if I ever thought that it was somebody in my campaign that was involved in something like that - they’d be fired,” he added.

With that, Obama boarded his airport-bound bus to head to Milwaukee for a rally.

All the Democrats need to do is be quiet, people like me will harpoon McCain with the issue.

I agree with JB. All the Dems need (and should) do is stay quiet.

Poor McCain. In the last few days he hasn't been able to catch a break. First Gustav threatens NO during the opening of the GOP convention, reminding folks of how Bush and FEMA botched Katrina. Then Hanna shows up, and could be pounding on Savannah and South Carolina just as the convention winds up.

Now along comes this story about Palin's 17-year old daughter being five months pregnant. That's bad enoubh. But if rumors keep circulating that Palin's last baby was actually her grandchild by the same daughter it will make it even harder for the McCain folks to get the media's focus back onto his campaign.

Bayou Bill

HOOOOORAHH!!!
Sorry. You gotta hand it to Obama, he has more class than Oxford and Cambridge University in friggin September.

Textbook perfection.

Its not class at all. Obama doesnt want the problem, and knows conservatives cannot be happy about Palin right now, and will take care of business for him.

It's fine so long as she's not aborting it. Witness the popularity of the movie "Juno." Conservative values across the board. If you have sex out of wedlock, you shoudl be punished with pregnancy (birth control should not be given or taught to teens as they will end up thinking that sex is just for fun and pleasure, not pro-creation); if you get pregnant you don't abort, rather you put that baby up for adoption, as the job of unwed mothers is to provide infertile couples with much wanted babies.

Hence, Palin's daughter is doing okay so far. She had sex out of marriage, and the result was pregnancy; yet, she hasn't aborted, and the baby will be cared for by an adult, not the unwed teen. All good.

Do I need to remind you that the Christian Right is absolutely going haywire with joy over her, and that donations are about to skyrocket?

Well shit, the Republicans have been going on for ages about how women should be at home with the kids.

Yeah - What the hell's wrong with those Jean Kirkpatrick, Condi Rice, and Margaret Thatcher bitches, anyway? Who do they think they are putting on shoes and leaving the kitchen? What's with Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina, leaving kirke und kuchen to go run Ebay and HP and now serving as McCain advisors - the nerve!

LE JACQUELOPE

John McCain miscalculated. Palin threw a wrench into the GOP convention machinery. No one wants to talk about McCain, they wanna discuss the scandal.

I would agree. It has the appearance of a mom with her priorities mixed up - a mom who delegates the care of her children to others so she can go around looking hot and making speeches. Personally, I like women who go around looking hot and making speeches, and I don't trust any kid of childbearing age to exercise good judgement when raised in a conservative household, but that's just me, and I'm not representative of the ignorant voting public.
