Damn! I hate it when that happens. Plan ahead for your 10Kth post. I am. ;)

hey guru, any more perqs come up at 10K? I really wanted that 1000th one to get the custom AV text.

Hope it was worth it.

Cause that's a godawful band. They need to decide between being a band or being politicians.

they're a great band, IMO. And one of the few who have managed to pull off both. If you don't care for them that's one thing but to call them Godawful is ignorant.

Just an opinion. If you like 'em, more power to you. And they haven't pulled off both. They PLAY as politicians. Perhaps I should have been more clear. They don't affect any real change. They're typical celebrities sticking their noses in the new cause of the month.

And seriously...what sort of guitar player calls himself 'The Edge'?

Anyway.

Congrats on your 1000th.. I got mine today too.

Not a fan of U2...just not my cup of tea, kinda agree with RastaPope......but if you dig em...cool for you.:D

but that's not true. They haven't adopted "the cause of the month." u2 has been involved with Amnesty International ever since they developed a high profile. We're talking about going on 20 years now. The natural outgrowth of that has been Bono's involvement in campaigning for 3rd world debt relief, a subject no less than treasurer Paul O'Neill calls Bono an expert on. Just last week in ohio, senator voinovich, at the same time that he was saying that almost every celebrity who shows up on capitol hill is a diletant, called Bono an expert on his cause as well.

I don't see where edge's name is relevant. Simply put, you don't know what you're talking about. Like i said, nobody is required to like any music. That's all a matter of taste. But your statements about the band are untrue.

musical tastes are individual. I don't begrudge anyone for not liking music i appreciate. RastaPope is making statements while clearly not knowing the facts, that's my big problem. That and the fact that he would call a band whose fans typically range in age from 14 to 50 and have interests in all kinds of music "Godawful." That just doesn't make any sense.

It doesn't make sense that I used a particular word to describe what I think of a band? That's just ridiculous. Oh, wait, does 'ridiculous' not make any sense in describing my feelings toward my previous statement? Hrm...strange.

Shit, did it again.

It doesn't make sense that you dismissed a band that has such broad appeal TO SO MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF MUSIC FANS as godawful. I think at some point, the fact that so many different fans and musicians value their work should take them beyond such statements.

I suspect, however, that your interest here has more to do with trying to get a good heated argument going that actually stating anything of significance about the topic at hand. Especially since you had no response when I called you on your ignorant statements about u2 "playing" at politics.

I take no pleasure in arguing for arguments sake so forget it unless you actually have something to say.

So basically because a broad group of people think they're great, I should choose my words more carefully when saying what I think about them? That's bollocks. A lot of people espouse the greatness of being a vegetarian, doesn't mean I don't think they're kooky.

And they ARE playing at politics. They're quite simply armchair politicians. In the great scheme of things, a band AIN'T gonna do jack shit to change the world. The music community and hippies alike learned this in the 60s and 70's. How much money do you reckon they have? How big do you think their houses are? Probably a lot, and more than big enough, I would guess. Money better spent on their cause than on their material possessions.

Anyway. This is a silly argument to be havig at 3:30 in the morning. We shall agree to disagree, yes?

you ignored the key point of my argument and they are not politicians, they are activists and never claimed anything else. But you're right, this is a silly argument -- at any time -- because you're trying to go on about semantics instead off staying on topic.

We will agree to disagree.

Congrats Fanzee

I was asleep when you went 1000. I wanted to be up for the party. Did I miss anything good?
Like a Naked Victory dance???

All bands/singers get involved with Amnesty international 3rd world debt relief/land mines/ saving the rain forrest, its endless personaly i think its just shameless publicity seeking. Handy to be on the front page to when latest single is about to be released.
:D
Congrats on reaching 1000 posts to.

thanks for the congrats.

all bands are not activists and u2 really have not been guilty of pandering. They've stuck with the same interests (amnesty international and 3rd world debt relief) for years. It hasn't changed, regardless of record sales, tour dates or anything else. I agree that most bands are rather transparent in their support of such causes but I think you should pay close attention to u2's actions in this vein before you group them in with the rest.

OK. I'm going to let this go now. I don't come to Lit to debate these kinds of things. To everyone I've gone back and forth with on the topic of U2, let's just all agree to disagree.

Peace. Now let's go have some fun.
