So, this American duo of journalists, one armed with what I assume is a covert video camera, bribes themselves onto a Chinese tourist trip to North Korea. The result is one part scary, many parts sad, and an infinite amount of surreal.

The Vice Guide To North Korea

Video might take some time to load (or it's just my ISP, which has been acting up lately), but it's in snippet episodes, and totally worth it.

OMFG! That is the freakiest bunch of videos I have ever watched! God, I'm at a loss for words!

Oh, my.

The kids - those poor robotic forced performers.

And Episode 13 - the Arirang - amazing.

:)

Let's not forget this so-called country has nukes.

Plus, the 'Great Leader' is a meglomaniac with delusions of grandeur.

That is just plain scary. :(

Weird thing is, this is exactly how I pictured North Korea. This is exactly how I picture every Workers' Paradise.

And somewhere far away from these empty highways and barren plazas, thousands of starving people are struggling in freezing mines and broken-down factories.

Free the Koreans!

Well I guess that is what you get with a Oligarchy, Dictator who is deluded enough to want his idiot sone to follow in his footsteps.
I'd be interested to see what happens if Kim Il sung should die with out a designated hier?

Imagine the conflagration as five or six meglomainiac Generals vie for the post of Dictator, Army against Army, as the world watches them fight each other.

I propose the title, "Seven Days after May Day!"

...and evacuate South Korea and Japan out of fear of stray nukes...

That was my thought. Even though they weren't giving the VBS guys access to people, the cities, buildings and roads appeared empty. Like it was built all for show and ego, and no other purpose.

The tea girl clip was fascinating to me. Well, a few others, too.

I wonder what would've happened to North Korea if it had just been ignored after the war. Would the incredible level of paranoia have been sustainable?

It's self perpetuating now. N. Korea is "maintaining vigiliance against the evil imperialist aggressors" and the west is watching an "axis of evil arming to threaten the peace of the world."
