I'm trying to write a story where this might be relevant, and I know it is a terribly personal question. But I would appreciate any help you ladies can give me.

The questions I have is: How long does a woman's menstruation typically last and What is the typical timing of it and How regular are they?

As I said, any help is appreciated.

Gross.

The average cycle is 5 days. Some report as little as 2 days and as many as 7. There are atypical cases.

The cycle runs like this:

The ovaries pop out an egg. It toodles through the tubes and hangs out in utero awaiting fertilization. The body is inundated with hormonal activity, first to make the egg leave the ovaries, and then to make the female really, really wanna have sex. After all, no sex, no fertilization. The egg is viable for 8-10 days, I believe. During this time the lining of the uterus is deteriorating slowly. Finally, about a week pre-period, the hormones are charging around again. This time it's to prepare the body to clean the womb, after all, bad egg, bad lining, it's got to go! So out it goes. This varies from woman to woman. PMS symptoms include but are not limited to: irritation, bloating, water retention, depression, anger, cramps, tender or sore boobs, back pain. The emotional stuff usually goes away with actual blood flow in me personally. The rest hangs out until it's all gone. Then the uterine lining begins to rejuvenate itself to be receptive to a new and hopefully fertilized egg this time. When it's ready, out comes the egg for the next set. This cycle is 28 days in most women.

Yes I quite agree.

Thankfully I won't have to go into any great detail about it in my story, but the timing will affect the plot.

Thanks for being such a great sport and answering my question.

depends

It depends from woman to woman. Everything said previously is true for some women. But in my family the menstual cycle does not regulate until about 30 yrs of age. This is a pain in my ass. Ever since i started puberty, i never know when i will start. Sometimes I have my perios every month and sometimes I can go up to 3 months without haveing one. Also as I get older my cycle is shorter, when i was about 15 In a regular month i would bleed for 7-10 days and now i only bleed for about 4 or 5. While on my period I either lose a lot of energy and just want to sleep, or i have more energy than ever and run around cleaning, cooking and anything else i can find to do.
