Code:
 [COLOR=blue] A Fatal exception 0E has occured at 0028:c02a27a8 in VXD VWIN32(05)
+ 000012d0[/COLOR]

Damned if I can see what causes it, or how to solve it. Anyone got any ideas?

It happens every time I start up, and appears to be triggered by something near the end of the start up process. I can't be sure, but I think it first started appearing after I switched from DSL to Cable, though that may be irrelevant.

Do these things, in this order:

Scandisk, Regclean, Defrag, Reboot, Shower.

Make sense?

You can download regclean from MS, do a google search, or I can send the file to you.

Also, try removing any programs from startup if you can.

Good luck!

If you have teak U.I., reset your system files and restart, that should clear it up.

What is teak UI? I can't defrag, every time I try it never gets past "Checking Drive for errors Progress 0%". Even when I leave it over night.

I can't seem to restart properly either - it freezes during shut down and has to be manually reset.

Ahh, licky tells me that her's does the same things, and has done for a while. No more panic, I've figured it out - my computer is having sympathy pains. Now if someone could just fix hers all our problems would be solved.

What version of windows do you run ? Tweak is on the disc for 98, and should be in the control panel if you have ME.

Too much scumware.

Cut the mickey mouse crap and 90% of your windows problems disappear.

If tweak U.I. is not listed in your control panel you'll need a disc to get it then. Mr. Bill hid a very good tool on the disc for some reason, it should have been put in all control panels.

You have to run Scandisk to clean up the errors on your hard drive before running defrag, but make sure you run it aggressively.

Click : Start/Run
Type in: scandisk

Under Type of Test, click THOUROUGH
Check off "Automatically Fix Errors"

Click OPTIONS
Check off "Scan System and Data"

Be sure you don't have any programs running in the background, including screen savers. Depending on the size of your hard drive, it could take several hours. I set mine up before turning in
If it keeps restarting it means you have a program running somewhere.

When it's done, then you can run Defrag.

Also be sure to empty your garbage files - Trash, Temp Files, etc.

You can also run RegClean - Type RegClean under Find files and run it to clean up your registry.

Also download a copy of Adware from Download.com. It's free and cleand up all the BS in your system you didnt know you had.

Emptied everything, restarted in safe mode, ran thorough scan disc as indicatred, (4 hours later) started defrag, went to bed, next morning: "Checking drive for errors progress 0%"

*sigh*

Thanks Freaky, no sign of this error message anywhere. The only reference I've found to it went something along these lines "We have no idea what causes this error, one user suggested it was caused by a faulty fan causing overheating"

A "Fatal Exception 0E" (AKA an exception 13) is a fault caused when one program tries to modify memory assigen to another process -- often memory assigned to the operating system.

It's entirely possible that the drivers for your DSL connection are still trying to load and conflicting with the drivers for the cable modem.

I don't know if it will reveal anything, but try holding down the control key when you boot the computer. That will bring up a menu that includes "Step by step confirmation" (or some similar wording.)

Choose the step by step confirmation and make a note of what is trying to load when the fault happens. It's probable that what's trying to load isn't going to be the problem -- it's just going to give you a clue as to where the problem is...

Try skipping over (answering "no") various steps in the boot process until you find the one that needs to be removed.

Juspar, heres a solution

Open Start Menu
Click Run
type (msconfig) without brackets
press enter

Open the Start Up tab

Hit Printscreen key.

Open MSPaint or any other graphic software

Create a new picture and select paste
it will paste the saved clipboard file into it.
Save it and email it to me at kurgzcomp@yahoo.co.nz

I'll check it and show you which things to disable.

Ok, Win98SE has a bug in the shutdown routine on ATX equipped machines (most modern PC's). Go here ~ http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/ and download the patch. Install it and it "should" cure it.

Freaky, thanks for the link to the Windows Error Message site, that will come in damn handy.

See, even us techies need a bit of help at times.

Keep up the good work.

If defrag doesnt finish you probably have programs running in the background. Is your screensaver turned off? Are all windows closed?

Hit ALT + CONTROL + DELETE at the same time. Write down what it says and let us know.

The more you use your PC the more you shuld run scandisk and defrag. I do it once a week, You can't do it too often.

Miles, it's not always the case that something's running to stop a defrag. When I was running 98SE, after a while my defrag quit working too. I finally gave up trying to use it and used VoptMe instead. Worked better, faster and had more functions than the standard Windows defrag program.

Sometimes, Windows just plain blows. I was never happier than wen I got rid of 98. :)

You know how you got me to install XP

It took out the modem you bastard... so I cant get on at home...

I'm not happy!

Oh and Cherry dear... just you and me at the wedding, he's not invited.

Hi ya Cheeffy, conifure your modem as a standard modem until you can find a WinXP driver for it.
