Jeff Sessions’s war on forensics means unsafe convictions

The Trump administration’s assault on science continues in the early days of his presidency. Recently, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the dismantling of the National Commission on Forensic Science (NCFS)—a body dedicated to improving accuracy and reliability in forensic evidence used in criminal cases.

Not only is this short-sighted but it short-circuits efforts to address issues involving forensic errors, wrongful convictions and crime lab misconduct.

The practical effect of this action is not that states are going to pick up the mantle and bear the burden of creating forensic science standards. Instead, the ensuing stagnation will lock the forensic science community into a silo and allow problems to persist.

JB looks like a deranged A.E. Newman. Who picked him to be AG?

Trump, figures.

Never mind. I'm sure that the forensic science community can stay up to date by watching television crime dramas.

And heaven forbid that some black man convicted many years ago should be exonerated by DNA or other methods. The word of a white citizen and an all white jury will suffice to bring justice to America.

I know we all get more conservative as we get older. And everyone looks back at their early years as a better time. But really... scaling back forensics. Be burning coal in fireplaces for heat next.

Boston, MA

Several thousand people filled Boston Common to show their support for science in the face of climate change denial and proposed federal government cuts.

Scientists and researchers from Harvard, MIT and Massachusetts General Hospital were among the crowd at Saturday's March for Science.

Similar rallies were held in more than 500 cities around the world and coincided with Earth Day activities.

WTF point is there, to defunding NIH ?

Don't worry. The con artist has given his word that science is critical to achieving the twin goals of economic growth and environmental protection in his administration.

In fact, he's so hyped on science his proposed budget would cut the Environmental Protection Agency by one third. His budget director was even more candid.

Asked at the White House's roll-out of the spending proposal about the cuts to climate change-related programs, Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said those programs are "a waste of your money."

"I think the President was fairly straightforward," he said. "We're not spending money on that anymore. We consider that to be a waste of your money to go out and do that. So that is a specific tie to his campaign."

"...double-digit cuts to the National Institutes of Health — America’s research bulwark against infectious diseases, cancer and other threats to public health — could mean the NIH will be unable to issue any new research grants in 2018."

"...if we let politics overtake the search for truth, much of what has made America great will disappear."

Resist!

"I think we’ve gone through 40 years of a country being dumbed down,” Moore said. “We defunded our schools allowing them to just go into an awful state. The arts have been canceled and civics class is gone from a third of our schools
now.”

Ironically, Moore points out the reasons for Trump’s election and the lack of action concerning gun violence are the results of the same problem. “I think the equation is simple,” he explained. “It’s the American equation. Dumb down the population and make them ignorant and stupid. Ignorance leads to fear, fear leads to hate. Trump knew that part of the equation really well. And hate leads to violence.”

"Educators" tend to be liberal, especially in college, and the dumbing down looks like their work.

And I'm willing to bet you don't even see the contradiction in concepts there.

So tell me this "contradiction?" The dumbing down is caused by several factors, and most of them are liberal ideas, such as social promotions and PC and New Math and One-size-fits-all.

Like No Child Left Behind, right?

Try to sray with me now. There is a huge problem with dumbing down students, particularly in college. As in, college is not about learning anymore.

If college isn't about learning, No Child Left Behind does not matter.

I see the contradiction - Educators and Liberal.

If the purpose of educators is to expand people's minds, that seems to fit perfectly with a "liberal" philosophy which espouses the same.

Compared to a conservative philosophy which, as we see every day, ignores facts because their beliefs might be offended.

That's a crock. It's actually the opposite. Go to pretty much any college campus and, if a conservative is scheduled to speak, you can count on liberals to do anything to prevent that from happening, including rioting in the streets and arson and whatever than can manage to do. And, this is not just students; even those who should be teaching get in on the act.

Like No Child Left Behind, right?

That's PC speak for social promotions, which means advancing children to the next grade even if they have not mastered the coursework in the lower grade. The result of this is students who fall behind their peers, which often leads to dropping out of school. Another possibility is functional illiteracy in some of those who have actually graduated from high school.

You do know it was that great "liberal" George Bush who was the one who implemented No Child Left Behind, don't you?

Well, let me introduce you to the logical fallacy, False Dichotomy. There is a middle ground. Liberals do NOT promote such philosophy.

Educating and teaching people to think critically is a liberal concept, but it does NOT mean today's Liberals are actually liberal. They are regressive and also have beliefs which should be criticized.

Educated people should know the diffence, and they should be able to decipher when a Liberal is using the term liberal in the incorrect context.

You are being disingenuous, and you know it.

The Attendance Numbers From the March for Science Are In…

The first estimates for five major cities who participated in the March for Science are now in. The numbers indicate that hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world participated in the protest against President Trump’s anti-science policies.

Washington D.C. – 40,000 people

Chicago – 40,000 people

New York City – 20,000 people

Philadelphia – 10,000 people

London – 10,000 people

Not Pussy Hat numbers but not bad for nerds.

I see the contradiction - Educators and Liberal.

More the obvious that being more educated makes you less inclined to be stupid rightist.

As noted earlier, "liberal" doesn't really mean what the stupidly inclined rightists think it means.

Really? So tell me, how am I being disingenuous when the con artist himself says he takes science very seriously in his administration, then turns around and cuts 1/3 of the budget for the EPA because, in his own words:

"Environmental Protection, what they do is a disgrace. Every week they come out with new regulations. They're making it impossible —"

Wallace interjected, "Who's going to protect the environment?"

"They — we'll be fine with the environment," Trump replied. "We can leave a little bit, but you can't destroy businesses."

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/donald-trump-epa-dept-of-education

This is the same dolt who said climate change was something made up by China to destroy American businesses yet, when pointed out by "liberals" climate change is not bound to a specific country, merrily goes on his way. This in addition to the numerous conservatives who are roundly cheering destruction of this agency. Because who doesn't want a Love Canal in their backyard?

Also, I never said liberals shouldn't be criticized. You did. If anything, those "liberals" you whine about in education are actually doing a favor. By spouting what they do, it forces people to look deeper and say, "That can't be right." People can then challenge them and point out where they're wrong. It's called critical thinking when doing such a thing.

The problem comes in when what they say is right and conservatives refuse to accept the facts. As we see every day in this country. Pick any subject. Climate change (above), fracking, pollution in general, trickle down economics, being gay, the list goes on. Each and every one of these subjects conservatives refuse to admit defeat on because it means they're wrong.

"Liberals", and liberal education, are instituting critical thinking by shoving facts in the face of deniers. But these facts are disregarded as this article points out:

http://archive.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2010/07/11/how_facts_backfire/

as does this one:

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-people-fly-from-facts/

Certainly there are idiots on the left who believe a utopian society is possible or that no Muslim is bad, that doesn't mean they're regressive. Regressive means going backwards, something a "liberal" can hardly accused of. If you want to see regressive, take a good look at conservative tax policies or how they view society. If it were up to them, people would once again be forced to be Christians, the Church and State would be once again joined, industry would be free to plunder without regard for environmental or human concerns, and the government would be free to dictate how people should live their lives with women's lives being low on the totem pole.

If you doubt this, you haven't been reading what conservatives have been saying for the past several decades.

Exactly, you fucking idiot. I haven't been listening to what conservatives have been saying because I went to COLLEGE. I was born in 1988 and I graduated college at the age of 24 in 2012. I know exactly what happens in the classroom, and I know who's teaching students during this era.

The ONLY time I studied under conservatives was when I went to a private middle school for 3 years. And yes, it was exactly as you describe it. They teach bullshit in science. The brainwash the kids. I know, because I was brainwashed. That's where my fear of hell came from.

Buuuut you see, I saw both sides of the spectrum. I live in a conservative state, grew up in church, and then I went to college and came to a realization.

Everything I grew up learning socially was bullshit. All of it. And I learned to take everything with a grain of salt. But then, I realized something far worse...

As I tried to step across the aisle, I was met with people who still accused me of the same shit they accuse the most radical far right of. It's unbelievable, and it's impossible to describe the feeling. I realized that there was bullshit coming from the left as well. It was just as bad as the right. Just as bad.

So, I don't pick sides. And if I criticize one side or the other, I'm labeled the same as a Nazi or a Baby Killer. It suuucks being in the middle.

But that's a good thing. My stances on political issues aren't to make friends or money. My thoughts on social issues are not to be kind or to think of people's feelings. I'm not interested in that. Who I vote for is not to be apart of the collective. My stances, my thoughts, and my votes are mine. I make an assessment of the risks and benefits, and I decide. If that means voting for Trump, then so be it.

And by the way, since we're discussing liberalism and free thought, telling a person not to vote because they disagree with them is the most illiberal thing you could possibly do. It's almost as if you want to censor those votes. It's almost as it you're not liberal at all.

Ah, Mr. Know It All, Wet Behind the Ears graduated college in the far distant past of 2012. Figures.
