"In the name of the holy church of Rome, I charge thee with heresy, and condem you to the torments of hell"

This particular period in time, interests me quite alot. Especially the way the Catholic Church's Inquisition worked.
Pointing fingers at minds that didn't correspond with the, at the time, church's views.
The way they prosecuted people, labelled them as heretics, and totured them until they got the confession from them....Lets face it, hours upon hours of painful torture....wouldn't you confess to just about anything, just to be rid of the pain and suffering.

I especially find it mind buggling, how the inquisition took it upon themselves to "police" the world, and mark people left and right.
And how eager the inquisition was to believe anyone that came to them, in the name of God, and pointed fingers at other people.

(Ref. The Salem Prosecutions, though the inquisition did not work in early America, as they did in Europe)

However, what gets me most of all, is this. I turn on CNN World, and watch the news. And I see the same eagerness to point fingers, I see the same "Civilized" prosecutions. Using the same methods as the Catholic Inquisition did, Hundreds of years ago.

Sometimes it makes me think....Mankind has not improved at all. Just added on more padding, and calling it. "Civilization a la 2001"

Isn't it true that in that time frame that most of their neighbors and friends turned them in? I know I have read a lot of books about such 'church doings' but I always wondered if this was true or if some just were chosen at random? Maybe because they were different?

Any little thing turned them into a 'witch' actually.

Some were even turned in by those who were doing the wrong themselves just to get off the hook. I use to study back in school the witch hunts and different forms of torture used.

Such as the water torture, they would drown the victim, if the body flosted after death they were a witch, if they sunk to the bottom then they were not. Unfortunately the victim had to drown in order to prove innocence.

Yes unfortunately, it is true Jadedpast. A lot of people turned in their friends family and neighbours, accusing them for all kinds of shit.
Usually it got the accused condemed, totured and eventually killed in some awful way.

The sad thing about it is. That several things indicate that people turned on their family and friends out of spite, or a small difference of opinion...the rest turned on their "loved ones" to be on the good side of the church.

I may not have all the specific details here, so I may be wrong about a couple of things....I am sure Todd knows the full meaning and doings of the Inquisition.

If you please Todd???

I was thinking that our society isn't all that different today. Today people have their own 'witch hunts' Only because certain laws have been implemented....there is usually no bloodshed and the church or other organizations can no longer 'put someone to death' just because they are different. But there are other ways to kill someone..........without actually causing them harm.

You can kill their spirit....you can kill their sense of worth.

Ask any psychiatrist or psychologist......... they'll tell you that the reason most people commit suicide or fall into depression is because of their peers.

Children pick on other children because they are 'different' than them. Things like wearing glasses and dressing different are things that matter to them. Or if you don't have the same toys that they have.

Teenagers decide if you are cool by looking at the clothes you wear and by what you look like and how much money you have. And if you don't fit in.... you are ridiculed....

Adults... they find more crafty and creative ways to single people out. Religion comes in to play... as does politics. Beauty and handsomeness affects being accepted. And once again....if you don't fit in...... you are ridiculed in front of everyone.

In our culture...it becomes a 'survival of the fittest' only the strong shall survive.... and most have the theory of 'who the hell cares about who gets hurt in the process.' I have to be up front and say that I care.

For those who are weak have something that most of the strong will never have..... and those qualities are love and humility.

What am I supposed to say here?

Because I am a christian its all my fault?

Yes, your right it was done by the "church".
Yes, you are right it was done "in the name of God".

Do I think the head figures behind the whole of the inquistion were christian? No!

I think they were probably charasmatic men {maybe even women as well} who could really swell peoples emotions into whatever thought frenzy they want. Some what the way Adolf Hitler used words and emotion to ignite a nations hatered of Jews, the way KKK leaders use an emotional appeal to the younger generation to hatred of blacks {oh, whoops got to be politically correct, African American}, the way reublicans use emotioanl and national appeal to try and get the citizens to use thier own natural resources to be self sufficient {oil fields of alaska and texas}, the way the democrats use emotional appeal of discrimination to fuel the fires of hatred, that wasn't there in the first place.

Charasmatic men {and women} using followers to spread and further thier own objectives. Sometimes these menwere complete ly evil in thier ways and methods, but their charasmaticism probably convinced a lot of people right {Hitler for example, most Germans that I have met online or know that immigrated to New Brunswick from Germany, know that what Hitler did is evil/wrong but where was that thought then, buried in a charasmatic conveyed belief that he was right. Hitler told the people straight out, "If you tell a lie, loud enough, long,enough, often enough people will believe it to be truth"}

Often time the worst lies are those staturated with a little truth truth to be made believable.

Yes, the Inquistion happened, yes, the Crusades happened. Did the average participant who took part in it really understand that what he was doing was not part true christendom? Not likely!

But if it makes the sufferes of american slavery, the holicaust, the crusades, the inquistion, racism any sort of discrimination to place all the blame on me, feel free to.

Completely, people are harsh to judgment, and could care less half of the time if they are right or not. The only thing that has changed over the years since then is more people are aware of the situation, they just don't speak up. Most would rather just follow along and say nothing out of fear of being accused themselves.

Todd

Please dude. It was not an attempt to flame you, not at all. I just thought that since you ahve studied these kind of things far more than I have, I thought you would be kind enough to give your input on it.

Again, if it came off as a flame attempt, I am sorry. That was not my intention. I merely wanted your input on it.

Catholics are pretty cool about admitting when they are wrong. Might take them 4 or 5 hundred years.

LMAO!

Seriously.

Just another example that people don't care.

The invention of the internet has made it easier to make people misreable. Someone can hide behind a screen and make someone else feel misreable for the simple reason of 'because they can' Maybe deep down it makes them feel better..... maybe they get off on it at some level. But no one seems to realize that behind that other screen and that other keyboard... there is a person with real feelings. Someone who just wants to be accepted for who they are..... not for what someone expects them to be.

Everyone looks for a place to fit in. To finally find a place to belong. And I think that the internet could be a place for such an occurance...... If people would for once sit there and think about their words and actions.... to think about what they say or 'type' before they do it.

Everyone always wants world peace.... for everyone to get along. Well how can anyone get along when their is so much hate and anxiety floating around??

They can't that simple.

People who claim to want peace a majority of the time are some of those who descriminate. Then there are those who like the contraversy. (SP)

And Todd honey....

I don't care what a damn person on here thinks...... I luv you hon.... you are truly a great individual in your own right.... and don't you ever think otherwise.

I know from you that it was not attempt from you to flame me, I have spoken to you on and off lit enough to know that you were not trying to do that.

I just know that there are those who will take your little crumb and run with it, I was merely trying to beat them to the punch.

Not to be a stick-in-the-mud, but IMveryHO...

The Internet doesn't make anyone miserable. People's EXPECTATIONS of the Internet make them miserable.

Would you walk into a bar, pass out nude pics of yourself, and expect no response? Of course not. This is why I don't post pics of myself, nor do I say anything that I would be upset about if people made fun of it.

Do I get pissed at what people post here? Sometimes.

Do I ever think they have no right to post it? Never. They have as much right as I do.

This Internet is not some fairy land. The same people you meet in bars or at work or next door are here. It's just like Real Life. Some people will be nice to you. Other's won't. Does that mean the mean people aren't jerks? Of course they're jerks. But anyone who thinks that jerks don't exist everywhere is naive.

Like I've said a couple of times this week, no one is immune from the consequences of their actions. You are free to post pretty much whatever you feel here. But others are free to do the same. This "if you don't like it, don't read it" attitude is unrealistic - it assumes that your posts are immune from criticism. That's simply not true. No one is gets special consideration.

There are very wonderful people here at Lit. Even wonderful people will disagree, or fight, or have clash personalities with each other. That's life.

Just my two cents. We all need to chill out and not take all this so seriously.

Peace, y'all. ;)

I agree.... everyone has a right to post. everyone has their right to express their opinion..
and I agree that the internet is not a fairyland...... but some do use it as a way to hurt people...... maybe for no reason at all.

and personally ;) I wouldn't give anyone nude pictures of me..... :)
but thats just me :)

and I do agree that everyone needs to lighten up. :) including myself......... I think we need some happiness in this board.

Hear hear! (or Here here! or whatever) I'll drink to that, jadedpast. Less stress, more happiness.

All in favor say Aye.

Aye!
