This is both a personal ad as well as a meta question. First the ad itself:
I am a middle-aged attached guy whose relationship is kind of stuck at a plateau emotionally and physically. Plateau here is a euphemism! You might respond that I should move on, but I have (non-selfish) reasons not to. I am not looking for NSA sex, fuck buddy etc, but I would like to once again have some sort of personal connection with a member of the opposite sex. This could mean online friendship, intimate chat, etc.
Given that this is a personal ad I should say something about myself: I am genuinely interested in meeting people and learning more about them and their lives and interests. I might not always agree with the people I meet, especially on politics or religion (or science!), and I love arguing over these things, but I try to keep my conversations rational and productive. I love the outdoors: hiking, riding my bicycle. I love reading, fiction and non-fiction (I like reading philosophy; hopefully that will not turn you off). I love music: anything from the rock, blues and jazz to electronic, downtempo, and ambient.
I am looking to connect with women (ideally 35 or older) who are, at least at the outset, interested in open communication and friendship. I'd like the woman to be on the liberal side of the political spectrum (unless she can convince me to join her side - as noted I am up for a good argument).
The physical details are not highly relevant in my case, but I will add some since they are par for the course in personal ads: I am of slender build and not unfit (I wouldn't dare claim I am "fit" in an age when that seems to imply a six pack), black hair turning grey, and women have not found me unattractive, generally speaking. I like women who are open and kind, and who have a sense of humour. I have a small preference for brunettes over blondes or redheads.
Now for the meta:
I have no clue to go about finding someone. Sites seem to fall into either sexual connection (AFF, etc) or dating (Match, okCupid, etc). To make things worse (for me), women on any of these sites and forums must be inundated with requests of every type and will, I am guessing, of necessity have to employ some sort of bulk filter. The chances for anyone to make it through the filter is small, and it is made worse by the fact that circumstances do not permit me to add a photograph or extensive details to any such ad.
Am I on a futile search? I appreciate any advice.
