Prefered sword is a waikachi (Japanese shortsword)

I have been trained using a katana and a nija-to as well. However, the Katana I think is a little too big, and the nija-to is basically not more than a big knife.

Nope, Waikachi is my sword definately.

i need to find someone or some class to teach me how to swing around a pair of scimitars (or machete or whatever you call them)

I hold a 10th degree pink sash (the one with the gold highlights) in Bull Squirrel Gungfu [editor's note - sneak up and hit them with a bat.].

Well, if you are interested in Tai Mantis Kung Fu (Plum Flower), Northern Shao Lin, Southern Five Animals, or Chen Tai Chi, I could help. =o)

Well, I have trained Northern the longest, so I am best with staff and spear. Know a Southern fan set...but its kind of showy, not super applicable, but I am the only female in the school so I had to learn it. I know Snowflake sword set...but I am pretty small to do it well. shrug smile

My training involves unarmed combat for the most part. Some weapons (particularly the bo)...

Basically, preparation for that day when you're jumped... and you left your sword in your other pants! ;)

As far as style goes, I like kicks... and lots of 'em!

And to answer the question about rates... well, I've paid anywhere from $5 - $25 per class. Location has a lot to do with it.

In all seriousness....

whats a good rate for instruction?

I took Choy Lit Fut Kung Fu for a year and a month. The school I went to gave me a one-on-one private lesson once a week, plus I could attend as many of the daily group sessions (kicking classes, blocks & punches classes, stretching) as I wanted. The cost was $1200 for the year, plus I had to pay for a mouthguard, gloves, & shoes once I started sparring at yellow sash level. Which is as far as I progressed...the higher up you go, the more time you have to spend learning the forms and techniques, and the less time you have to do other things. It's a serious time commitment. With the site and my freelance stuff as busy as it is, it just wasn't the right time. I was really bummed when I had to quit. I do want to start up again, only next time I think I want to go with a deal that offers more private instruction. I'm clumsy, and I need it.

It's awesome, though. You get to hit stuff. You get to do kicks until your muscles ache. It's the most serious full-body workout out there. You get to yell. You get to walk around with huge bruises on your arms from doing three-star, which means your significant other gets dirty looks whenever the two of you are out in public together. I'd go to work (this was when I had a 'real' job), go to the school, do a half hour of kicking class, do a half hour of blocks & punches, then either do an hour private lesson or a half hour of stretching, depending on the day. The stretching was brutal...being pushed into left, right, and center splits. Painful, but in a good way.

Yup! I agree Laurel. I would reccommend martial arts, of almost any kind to ANYONE. Its a great workout mentally and physcially...and you learn you can do amazing things you never thought you could. Really....it's one of the best things I have ever done with my time.

and scylis...any attention from you us compliment enough. grin...merowl

Did manu approve...

And very very kinky!

What does martial arts actually do for you people who did it? Another way to get fit or did you feel something special about it?

For me it started as a way to get fit, but it bloomed into a lot more. Gives me more confidence in myself, greater mental stamina, higher tolerance for pain (and for assholes). There is some philosophy to it, and while I don't subscribe to *all* of it, a lot of the Taoist 'let it be' attitude has really helped me live in a more mellow way. I don't know really, it's the same only thing you hear from people I guess, but it kind of helped me grow into myself.

btw Chef, I like your taste in music and....'zee flame es okey-dokey' :p

*blushes* aaww.. shucks...

Depends I guess....if its a similar hue to the one you wear when you are thrusting and gasping, then sure I think it might be nice. :p

well.. i wouldn't know.. nobody knows if that's true... yet...

care to help me find out? ;)

Aaahhh sexy man sexy man! It's my turn to offer a rain check. I'm off to gape at Angelina Jolie in a few minutes...but I *WILL* take you up on that if it would please you.
