Australian pub bars heterosexuals

A gay pub in the city of Melbourne has won the right to ban heterosexuals - the first time such legislation has been passed in Australia.

The Victorian state civil and administrative tribunal ruled the Peel Hotel could ban patrons based on their sexual orientation.

The pub's management said the move would stop groups of heterosexual men and women abusing gay people.

Civil liberties groups have supported the decision.

'Safe balance'[/B]

The tribunal's president said groups of straight women found homosexual men entertaining but that such attention was dehumanising, the BBC's Phil Mercer in Sydney says.

Managers complained raucous hen nights and stag parties created a poisonous atmosphere for its gay clientele, our correspondent says.

"If I can limit the number of heterosexuals entering the Peel, then that helps me keep the safe balance," the hotel's manager, Tom McFeely, told Australian radio, according to the Reuters news agency.

He said while Melbourne had 2,000 venues catering for heterosexuals, his was the only bar aimed exclusively at gay men.

Civil liberties groups said homosexuals should be allowed to relax in places without fear of bullying or intimidation.

Australia's equal opportunity laws prevent discrimination based on race, religion or sexuality.

This is an example of a minority group not wanting equal rights, but superior rights. I'm sure a lot of gay people will be apalled at this also.

What next, a company which only lets gay people work there?

Or muslims? Or people from a specific race?

Lame.

If the village runs your business, you are right. If you, as an individual, run your business, you are dead wrong.

His complaint was about hen parties originally. Why not just ban hen parties because they cause too much trouble?

Lots of pubs in the UK have done that successfully, no need for any legislation to protect it, they just have a sign on the door.

I used to drink in a well-known biker pub in Bristol (now a gay bar eek) and we got hen parties a lot, the other biker pub just down the road didn't like them so they just banned them with a sign on the door.

No big deal at all.

Hen parties AND stag parties should be barred from most bars. They're irritating. And they should have their passports removed at check in at airports since they're such an embarrassment to their nation.

What about a bi-sexual?

Why give the bar owner the right to discriminate without a representative of the government there to ensure that someone is straight enough to be excluded...

;) ;) ?

Or is it that they may run across their husbands and cause a scene?

Nope, it's not the legislation, it's a ruling based on existing legislation. Our Anti-Discrimination Act.

The judgement has created a fair bit of controversy, but the fact simply is that as enlightened as Australia is, it's still not the safest place to be openly gay. You very rarely see two males out holding hands.

While I'm not gay, I support such a ruling. After all, they have gyms that cater exclusively to women, and there isn't massive beat-ups over this. Bars in Australia also have dress code bans - some can ban people for not being dressed in a shirt and tie, others will ban you if you *do* have one on.

Trajal, this isn't about superior rights. It's about giving gay men a safe place that they can express themselves. As the article stated - there are over 2000 bars, pubs and clubs. Surely no one will be terminally affected if one bar is retained for the use of homosexual men. I'm also interested to hear of the objections a gay male could possibly have against a gay-oriented bar. Anyway - if they object, there's 1,999 other venues that they can go to :)

Birthday parties in public should be banned especially at those establishments where the wait staff has to sing for your supper. They are a loud embarrassement. Like a cell phone. In fact, every venue should resemble your living room, unless you're one of "those" people...

;) ;)

So you can't discriminate on sexual preference, but you can on the basis of association?

I fought an Australian or two in Mexico and your karateka are kinda gay...

While I'm certain that what you said makes sense in your head, could you please translate that for the rest of us?

Urgh, yes definitely. And children, they should be banned from all public restaurants and bars. It's the noise of these things........I'm loving the living room image.

It's common practice to not allow large groups of people into a nightclub or pub at the same time because they might cause trouble. That's a clear safety issue. Women out on hen nights get raucous, so I can understand why it's perfectly acceptable to prohibit entry for them at times, same for men on stag nights (although they are often better behaved than the women).

I'm sorry but i find this whole thing hokey and one of the first few steps towards ghettoism. Have we learned nothing from the past?

I was a fighter at an international tournament. The Aussies talked loud and tough, but when it came to fighting, put a skirt on it and call it a kilt...

No...

You lie, sheep! Absolute LIES.

I was a doorman/bouncer. Groups are good, groups are money, groups are excitement, a bar needs all of the above...

If a group gets out of hand, 86 the loudest woman and bust the chops of the loudest man as you 86 him. No problemo.

The single guys will stay for a hen party hoping to pick off the drunks on the edges. You gotta have that. That's why all this legislating what a business can, or cannot do from the point of the mob is like letting your neighbors diagnose your kid's runny nose.

No,once a woman is drunk, she is convinced she can do anything she wants with impunity; the old double-standard. And once she feels wronged, she can easily find a champion...

Funny how the more civilized and sophisticated we are, the less we like the public...

What and men aren't the same? Pissed up individuals, regardless of their gender are not a pretty sight, nor at the top of their intellectual game.

I am neither sophisticated nor civilised. I just have an unfortunate hatred for things which make noise. ;)

No. Guys know if they get out of line, the bouncer will come down on them and he still has all his faculty and possibly a club...

It never crosses a woman's mind that a guy will say no to her or cut her off.

The thing is, if a bloke gets out of order, you can safely put him down. If a woman gets out of order and you try to wrestle her down or something then she can put in a sexual assault complaint.

That's the more serious side though, the main thing is that women in nightclubs in particular are a nightmare when they're on hen parties. Trying to grab the cocks of the glass collectors, annoying the barmen by demanding a snog before they pay for their drinks, bitching and insulting the barmaids and generally pissing off the door staff.

I promise, I speak from real life experience on this one.
