Megan
“You lousy motherfucker! Don’t tell me that wasn’t her!” She shouted at him as she hung up the phone, holding back the tears that stung her eyes. “And don’t tell me one more time you don’t know who I’m talking about. I’m not an idiot Mike, don’t treat me like I am. At least have enough respect for me to tell me the truth.”
“I love you,” he had started to say, refusing to look in her eyes.
“So much that you’d rather be fucking all of them, or her, or whoever the fuck, than me? Is that your definition of love?” She yelled, waiting only briefly for his answer before she went on. “Don’t you realize how much all this is driving me crazy!!! Crazy Mike, fucking nuts…I love you so damn much and thought…
Megan then collapsed on the floor with Mike rushing to her side.
Mike had sat on the edge of the bed watching Megan sleep these last few days, god you’re beautiful, I may not have said it as often as I should have… she had heard him whispering, so many things he had told her in these last few days. It had been along time since she had heard him express his love for her. Megan had given him quite a scare these last couple days, running a high fever, unable to keep anything down and in and out of consciousnesses. The doctor had come over to see her, giving her a shot along with a prescription, but made it clear she was to come in to see him in a week. It had taken most of the day and into the night for the medicine to start working, but she was going to be fine, thank god, although it had been a long time since he had feared like that. Now that it was over, he knew there were some changes he had to make in his life.
He loved her and the thought of losing her had been more than he could bare, spending these last awful days brushing the hairs from her face, cooling her body with damp cloth and remembering. Remembering the many days and nights filled with him kissing, caressing those lips, cheeks, neck. Days and nights spent in each others arms, naked bodies lusting; it hadn’t mattered what time, where or how. They had clicked the minute they laid eyes on one another and dreaded any time apart, making up for it when they were together.
She too struggled with all the memories as she drifted in and out of consciousness. What happened to those days, my god, they had only been together several years. She couldn’t remember when or why intimacy and sex had gotten further and further from their grasp, she couldn’t even remember the last time they made love.
What had the doctor said, something about why she had gotten so sick had her worried although it was her heart crying listening to him these last few days. He had told her how much he loved, couldn’t live with out him, and so on. She knew he loved her, but what had happened, why was it like this? Could he possibly have been blind all this time, not realizing these things between them were not right? Or was it true she was just crazy and he had always told her the truth, she was just imagining things, or hearing things.
Mike was in his mid forties and after going thru a divorce, his fault for getting caught cheating, several times, he had sworn never to marry or fall in love again. That was up until several years ago when Megan had walked into his life and he had realized he had never been in love until her. Now, watching helpless as she lay so sick, there weren’t any doubts in his mind he loved this woman more than anything. He vowed quietly to himself that he was going to change his ways and start showing her how much he loved and appreciated her. Could she believe him.
The phone rang. She pretended to be asleep, tears fell from her eyes as she heard what he said before he closed the door, leaving her alone.
