Could that include something that's only overheard? I'm playing with a story about a woman in a diner who slips into a booth near the back and overhears a couple, who don't realize she is there, talking about what they did the night before. Then it seems she hears them getting up to something and she imagines what she thinks they are doing. They may or may not be doing exactly that.

Can something that's only overheard be voyeur?

Thanks :rose:

Yeah, I think it can. that could be a really hot story, especially if you describe her growing arrousal at hearing their private convo.

;) TY. That's the idea. She usually comes in for coffee but by the end of the story she'll be asking for a cold drink.

This is tricky. I thought of saying no, but I re-read you post and it slipped past the line into voyeurism when I saw the portion I put in bold. For me, it's the imagining that makes it voyeurism, only listening wouldn't.

Sure, although voyeurism is almost exclusively defined as a visual experience, eavesdropping is a sort of aural voyeurism.

Whatever works, said the literary voyeur.

...although that would be more voy-ear-ism, wouldn't it?

I know. Sorry.

Seriously, I can't imagine what other category you'd put it in. Although technically the word is derived from the French voir, to see, it seems to me that excluding those who overhear the sexual experiences of others ought to be considered voyeurs as well, at least for purposes of Lit categories. It would certainly seem so if your character was directly overhearing the sex itself; by removing it one step, to an oral recounting of the night's goings-on, you're simply allowing her imagination to supply the details that she would otherwise get. It does sound like a hot little piece. Good luck, MP!

Thanks for your input folks. I think she's actually going to be overhearing them do something sexual in the booth but she won't be able to see them so her imagination is going to have to supply the details. I think this is going to be a fun one. I'm going to make her a bit of a prude, outraged at first by what she hears, she thinks of clearing her throat so they know she's there but something stops her. ;)
