Voting for Stories

I am relatively new to this site. To date I have submitted 4 stories. 3 are posted the 4th is pending.

I have just been taking a look at how a story I posted was scoring - 9000+ hits and only 20 votes - does that mean that at the maximum of the 9000+ people who read the story only 20 at the most bothered to vote.

Now regardless of how good or how bad a story is, it must appeal to some people out there, and if they read it through, common decency dictates they ought to at least post one vote.

I am moaning not because I want to win competitions or things, although that would be nice, but because it is nice to recieve some recognition for hours spent at the word processor. So if you read a story at least put in a vote - even if it only one point. If you were entertained or tittilated give it more.

Those numbers are not remarkable. First of all, the 'reads' is not necesssarily readers. We don't know who actually read all pages to the end. That could be 60 to 90% of the 'reads' that show.

But looking at a number of cases, most 'votes' tend to be between 0.5% and 2% of the so called 'reads.'

A more interesting number is the number who actually write, as a percentage of those who vote, and, of those, the number who say more than 'I really got off on your story.' If more than 1% of the VOTERS actually write, i.e. email, you should feel pleased. 10% would be phenomenal.

I am about in the same boat as you jon.hayworth. I have three stories posted and I'm getting read to submit a fourth. Your numbers are totally consistent with what my stories have read. I noticed one thing. My first two stories were in the Erotic Couplings category and they received the fewest votes AND reads. I would have thought they would get more since that is the biggest category. My third story was in the Voyeurism/Exhibitionism category and it received twice as many votes AND reads in 2 days than the two stories in Erotic Couplings did after 2 weeks!

So, my conclusion is to try and stay away from the Erotic Couplings category. Course, they many be a bad conclusion to make until I've posted stories in other categories.

Just my two cents... for what it's worth.

My first two stories were in the Erotic Couplings category and they received the fewest votes AND reads. I would have thought they would get more since that is the biggest category.

Erotic couplings is the biggest category and that translates to the category with the biggest "competition" for readers. Stories in that category really need good titles and a good "hook" to get the reader all the way to the voting form.

Another point to consider, is that a story has to "move" the reader in some way to get (most of) them to vote. Readers often save stories to disk to read later instead of reading them online, and if your story does rouse enough feeling in the reader to make the effort of finding the story again to vote on it worthhwhile, they usually won't bother.

There are a lot of other discussions on voting (in this forum especially) that might be worth the effort to dig up.
