I know this topic has been covered before but I just need to get this off my chest today.

I was over the moon that Chapter 3 of "All I Want Is You" (Romance) went to No 1 on the Top Story lists as I never thought it would do so well. I would like to thank everyone for voting a 5 for me (well the 19 that did anyway).

This morning when I checked my votings I noticed that it had fallen from its perch and was now standing at 4.73 with 22 votes.

So three votes really killed my story! It's not even in the top 500 now...

The last three must have really hated it or were "trolls"?

I know that there are more important things in life but as someone new to writing erotica it gave my self-confidence an enormous boost to see the story do so well.

I have sent a PM to Laurel but has anyone else experienced this. And do I just put it down to experience myself and sob quietly in the corner?

Any replies gratefully appreciated.

fuckifiknow.
My stories have, every one of them, gotten at least one downvote. And I don't get many votes! My story "Baroness' boy" was at 4.82- with twelve votes, One downvote knocked its little red "h" right off its title.

I don't care about winning any contests, but, yanno... It's a hot story, and I want my H back!

JanieXX-

we've all experienced it to some degree. Consider it a disgusting initiation...you're now in the club! (And don't bother to question, at least one of those votes is a one, and malicious...)

Congrats for going ahead and submitting your work here. :rose:

I think it's very unrealistic to expect a story to stay at a 5.00 for more than a few hours, to be honest. Not everyone is going to like your work. The readers of the Romance category are notoriously kind in their voting, but even so, stories just don't stay at 5.00. Think about it a sec: a rating of 5.00 is equivalent to perfect. I certainly don't think my work is perfect, and I don't expect perfection out of any other author here (although some come close).

A 4.73 is a very respectable score.

Let's look for a minute. You had a 5.00 with 19 votes. If you multiply that out, it equals 95.00.

Now you have a 4.73 with 22 votes. That equals 104 (rounded from 104.06).

Those three votes came to a total of 9. That means you could have had any combination of votes:

1 vote of 5
1 vote of 3
1 vote of 1

or

3 votes of 3

or

1 vote of 4
1 vote of 3
1 vote of 2

and so on.

I understand that it's encouraging to see your rating as high as possible, but you need to realize that your stories just aren't going to stay at a perfect 5.00. And, looking at just the three possiblities I posted above, you can't say with any certainty that it was a uni-bomber, either. In all likelihood, the last three votes were honest ones.

I hate to sound harsh, but the bottom line is that not everyone is going to enjoy your stories. Develop a thicker skin, and enjoy the feedback from the readers that do. Eventually, the rating on a story will stabilize, but it takes some time. And when they do stabilize, it won't be at a perfect rating.

my suspicions, based on my experience, is that it was two 4's and a 1...

and a 4.73 is an awesome score....

Thanks

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Oh I knew that the story would never stay at a 5 - that would be just too much to ask and I knew that it would drop down the lists which was fine. I fully expected that.

But to go from No 1 to number ???? in one day was a little suspicious to me.

I don't really understand how the voting is calculated so any help there would come in handy.

And as for developing a thick skin, the feedback I received from Chapter 4 of "Written Just For You" was a baptism of fire.

Anyone would have thought I had admitted to murdering innocent children. I never knew such names existed... ;)

Thanks again

I showed how in my post, but I'll explain again.

To figure out what a particular vote is, you have to watch your ratings obsessively, but it's possible to do it at times, or at least get some idea of what votes were.

here's an example:

Let's say a story has a rating of 4.50, with 20 votes.

You multiply 4.50 by 20, which equals 90.00

Then, you receive another vote, and your rating goes to 4.43.

To find out what that 21st vote was, you multiply 4.43 by 21 (votes), which equals 93.00 (rounded from 93.03).

93.00 minus 90.00 equals 3, so your 21st vote was a 3.

No, it really isn't suspicious at all. See my original post.

You're being awfully nice today.

What's wrong? ;)

Maths never a strong point!

Hi Cloudy,

Thanks for your patience! Maths never really was a strong point with me but now I can work it out.

I am still very happy with 4.73 and don't mean to sound like a moaning minnie.

Hi Janiexx,

I think we all have started out on the top lists the first day, it's simply a case of your story not having enough votes to maintain its position once it is no longer a "five". A low number of votes means you're vulnerable, and any score that isn't a five causes a radical fluctuation in the numbers. The more votes your story accumulates, the more stable your score will become.

Peace and luck on your story,

Yui

I've been checking for my story on the tops lists, and don't find it. I also didn't see any story with less than 11 votes, but then, I only checked on catagory. Is there a set number of votes you need to get on the list?

Yes. 10.

Edited: What Imp said. ;)

Hi Yui,

Thanks for your reply. I don't seem to attract a lot of votes (and hardly any feedback) so I can see why the story wasn't able to maintain it's position.

But I understand a little more now how the voting systen works so will shut up in the future and just get on with it.

We all bitch about voting occasionally, so no worries. :)
For example, I'm a little pissy because my first ever story just lost its H for the first time since it went up many months ago.

My Stories

Hey Janiexx,

No worries. Feel free to vent. Above is a clickable link to your stories to put in your signature. It will help people find your stuff. Just quote me and copy and paste the above link. You can replace the "My Stories" text with what ever you would like it to say. It might help up your votes, too. ;)

Luck,

Yui

Hey, yui, could I impose for one of those links to my stuff? Pretty please, with sugar on top? :rose: Or, you could tell me how to do it myself, if you prefer.

I just wish there were a way to cull out the obvious troll votes.

After all, if someone has 20 or 30 votes and their score is hovering in the 4.80 range, when the story's score suddenly plummets, that should be a sign that someone is just whacking their story out of spite or to be a jerk.

I know it's a fact of life here, but it's disheartening to see that one person can delight in ruining other people's days.

One way to stay away from Trolls, stay out of the loving wives Cat.

The way I feel, if I get and keep my H I'm a happy camper. And welcome new people to the Ah.
