Hi, I noticed that I had enough votes to qualify for the contest several days ago, but now the number of votes that I have has decreased to 21 but the average score on my story has increased. While I am pleased that my average has increased, I am dismayed that now I have to accrue 4 more votes before I am eligible. Could you tell me what happened to possibly 9 or 10 votes that just disappeared?
Thanks,
Lushus

Laurel occasonally purges bogus votes. The 9 or 10 you lost were proably votes from trolls that she removed to give you a better chance of winning.

That's probably it.
Also, if someone "accidentally" voted several times for your story, she would remove all but one, I think.

Yep, the way the site has been so slow over the past few weeks make accidental double votes fairly likely -- just like double posts on the board.

Well if they "accidentally" voted more than once, they voted against me because my score shot up after those votes were gone. I figured that the IP addresses were logged. It would only make sense to do that. The only problem is that now I am 3 votes short of having the required number for "Don Juan with a Twist." I dunno if my score is high enough to win, anyway, but it would be a bummer if I didn't get enough votes to qualify for at least the judging. Is the last day for votes the 29th?

You've now picked up another vote (a five) and a PC from me. That should leave you just a couple votes short. I checked you story out on the Top list and it looks like the two of us will have to be content with middle-of-the-pack status.

IMHO, you're story deserves a better score, and I 'm not saying that to be kind. The PC's you got by Sack and Black Tulip are in line with my thoughts. The category you picked isn't among the busier ones at Lit. That hurt your totals. Once a story rolls off the New list (seven days after being accepted) votes become few and far between.

Other contestants will usually try to return the favor if you read, vote, and leave a PC on their entry. And should you enter another contest, include a link in your sig line to the story.

None of that has ever helped me win a contest. But, like chicken soup, it can't hurt.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will keep that in mind for the future.

As far as the topic goes, I picked a very risky sort of subject for the contest, but I refuse to sell out to the mainstream.

As people comment, and as I read other successful stories, though, my writing ability grows. I hope to have more stories with the H beside them in the future.
