Please somebody tell me how a story starts on day one with 280 votes. I really would like to know the answer to that question.

I would too... that's very interesting. The author must have a VERY large following. :) I was so psyced to get 50 votes on a story finally... only took like 10,000 or so views... and many weeks.

And let me guess the vote average on that story is a perfect 5.0? LOL

I finally got a story to the big board with a five point oh.. ten minutes late it got a vote of 1... somebody takes this shit was too serious...

votes

I know what you mean. My stories have an average of about 4.2 but that is a lot of reads and few voters.

As for the descrepancy in voting, I know that Laurel was looking into funny voting in the BDSM category. I'm sure she will get around to them all eventually

The story would be rgjohn's Morning Light or something like that. It's in the incest category. That's how it can legitimately line up a large number of votes. He's got a line up of stories, so it's entirely possible he's built up a following as well. He may have a lot of friends who vote. One never knows these things.

It's generally best to believe the best about these things, I think.

Yes lets do give them all the benefit of the doubt so tell me how they read Find Julie in ten minutes lover....Some of these people are manipulating votes.... I don't know who but it sucks.... so let me see now i get all my friends to vote before they have time to read my next novel... that will be two votes but only if I vote myself. roflmffao .....

I see stories getting really high vote totals and I get frustrated too. But I think there are some legitimate ways to get big totals, some are easy to do, some hard.

1. Write a really, really good story. That's obvious, but the more your story stands out, the better a chance you have to get lots of votes.

2. Write a story that gets a very high score early on. A lot of people cruise the Top Stories lists, and if yours is there, you're gonna get a lot more readers and voters.

3. Write A LOT of really good stories. You will start to develop a following, and folks who have voted for you before will probably do it again. And that helps your score stay up.

4. Write a story with the word "Mom" in the title. That'll get people to at least read your story, guaranteed. Then all you need to do is write a killer story.

5. Really, really think about your title and description, especially if Mom isn't in the story. You only have about 25 words to hook people in when they cruise the listings, and you have to make every one count. Your story might be thermonuclearly hot, but it your title is "Bob" and the description is "Bob gets lucky", well, that's how people will think you write.

I used this tactic for one of my last stories. I called it "Those Autofellatio Blues". I figured autofellatio would at least get a few eyebrows raised. I used the word "Blues" to arouse (hopefully) some curiosity. Why would anyone who could suck their own dick have the blues? And then in my description I wrote, "Mom catches him doing something he shouldn't". Now, it's not an incest story. He gets caught, and the shit hits the fan. But I hoped the reader wouldt think the story funny and sexy enough to keep going, and so far so good. In about a week I had 50000 views and about 250 votes. If I'd called it "Suck Your Own Dick" and described it as "Boy learns he can suck his own dick", well, the response probably would'vnt have been as good.

Is there vote fraud out there? Sure. But unless you're prepared to commit fraud yourself, you need to find ways to make your stories stand out from the very large pack on Literotica.

Voting: si or non

I share some of the concerns voiced here, and let's face it most of the authors here like to see high voting results for their stories. But perhaps you might want to remember that the voting isn't necessarily a reflection on the merits of the story, but more the state of mind of the reader. Some stories that I feel represent my best work have gotten decent results, whereas some that were sort of throwaways earn much higher votes (but then I am my own worst critic). Bottom line for me is to not place too much emphasis on the voting, and just continue writing and trying to make the next one better.

I am not going to continue hitting at people but you had 50k readers in a week and 200 votes. I have done the reads with some mom things and even gotten close to 200 votes on some of them. But I have never had 200 votes the first day.

when i first posted to the incest category i checked to see if it was up before i went to bed and it wasn't there. when i checked the next day at noon it had been read close to 12000 times and had something like 150 votes. i was astounded. my biggest read at that point had been up over a month with just as many reads. what's up with the incest category?

found the same thing but not so many votes the first day but the reads are there. Either we are all dirty little boys at heart or somehow those guys open and close them ten times if you get my drift.

I may be wrong, but speaking from the limited experience of only having posted 5 stories, (all shorts less than 10,000 words) in 5 categories BDSM, romance, non-consent, erotic couplings and incest. Incest stories get the greatest number of hits like the one story only posted 2 days ago has more than twice the hits the other four got together, likewise the number of votes.

Do you write for the votes or write because you want to? I am writing what I want when I want.

I have 2 incest on the stocks but I also have another historical which will go on erotic couplings or romance - depends on how I treat the sex angle. And I am researching another historical novel. The point I am making is don't worry about the votes unless you are desperate to win.

That said I will worry with the Valentine's Day special.

Final point I think Novels published in one go are likely to be read as downloads - will folks come back to vote?

i definitely write for the writing. i posted that incest story and had shit loads of feedback, everyone asking when the next was coming out. so i wrote two more... BIG mistake. i ahve to admit that the first one ended begging for a sequel, and that wasn't so bad, but part three sucked (being in the incest catagory, it still got great votes).

anyway i got sick of the storyline and was realy blocked up. i said fuck it and went back to what i do best and was realy proud of what came out. it absolutely flew out of me. the problem was everybody who read it was expecting more of the incest story and it tanked.

anyway, back to my original point. most of us write simply to write. but you have to admit that the first time you saw one of your stories pull down a 4.68 you got excited. i had a story hit #8 on the erotic couplings top list for a day and i felt like king shit. i love opening my mail and reading feedback. i love it when someone recognizes me in a chat room or tells someone else that my shit is the bomb. it's a nice feeling. of course we write to express ourselves but a large portion of writing erotica is to get your audience off. when someone writes me and tells me that she printed out one of my stories and took it to the bathroom with her for her lunch break that's a really good feeling. i have one story that never made it to a 4 in voting and every time i look at it i think "what did i do wrong?" the trick is not to get caught up in that and keep writing what makes you happy. i really dig my low-voted story. that's the important part. jesus, am i rambling or what?

aaaaaanyway, if you just wrote for yourself you wouldn't post it. yes we write to express ourselves, we post here because we're vain.

Interesting. I have not attempted the incest catagory. All my stories are of the same character. I have found stories submitted in the humor catagory are not frequently read. I have 10 stories there, only one with over a 1000 views, and that is because I mention a babysitter sucking cock. Apparently the young stuff taboo. I also found Loving Wives gets more reads than group. So if it is a cross over catagory, I opt for loving wives over group. I should have made my wife my cousin from West Virginia. If I didn't vote, some of my humor stories would have any. My stories, although can be read as pieces have running jokes and ideas through them. Since it is the same character, it could be made into one long novel. In chronological order my stories would go Terry takes on the Navy, nancy the Drama teacher (loving wives) Whoring Night Series (Humor) Three for Tammy and the Night the Drove Old Dixie Down (group). I have fans who write to me frequently and love my collective works and humor, but they don't seem to vote on older stuff. Once my work is removed from the New list, no one ever again votes on it-although it is nice to see people still read them. I believe having a "W" story in humor is the bottom of the barrel for people. After having wacked off to everything else, at last result they chance the humor section.

The best feedback is when my other stories, which don't normally get read, jump in readership after I submit a story.

I was thinking about writing a non-erotic piece explaining some of the humor and running jokes and a few characters. The problem would be if I added to that story line- that would make my explanations obsolete.

How to get people to read your story? I guess rice is nice, but incest is best.

I have said this before and I will say it again..(shakes cane with knarled hands)

I am more interested in opinions than votes, and I am only interested in the votes of people that take the time to give an opinion.

What is more, if someone plain thinks my story sucks, I am more concerned with the wording of my description than the body of the story.

_And_, it would be much harder to fake 500 votes if you had to write 500 unduplicated, sensible paragraphs.

I would also like to read other peoples opinions of a story too.

What about a separate "Votes from registered authors"...Nah forget that, it would become tit for tat (what is a tat anyway)
