Ya know, poetry rates 5-10% votes per view ... whereas stories (at least mine) get about 0.05-0.10%

And I don't recall ever hearing anyone bitch about poems being uni-bombed.

So -- do trolls shun poetry? Or is it that there are no contests/top lists/awards for poetry -- hence less backstabbing? Some combination of the two? Something I'm missing?

In truth, I don't go into the poetry threads too often, but from what I have observed, if they are going to stab somebody in the back, they do it face to face. Sometimes they even name their seconds.

A more serious crowd, or at least, that was my impression.

That's why I stay away. I might be tempted to try some verse, and all of mine are for giggles.

Oh, and 1% voting on stories seems to be the average,

Two reasons come to mind relatively quickly -

First, it's not just the trolls that shun the poetry. Everybody shuns the poetry. ;)

Second, there is a core group of poets that are wonderful about checking the new poems daily and voting and leaving PCs. Lovely people, they are. :)

Don't stay away, Burly. Especially out of intimidation. Yes, there are some serious, and unbelievably talented, poets here, but it's a great group of people and giggles have certainly always seemed welcomed. Witness Liar, Lauren, and Foooooool. ;)

Poetry does have contests, does it not? As far as I knew they did.

I view Poets Corner regularly. never contribute but read a lot in a vague attempt to educate.

They have pretty blunt critiquing on the board which may encourage commentators to be more open. The volume of postings is smaller, open critiquing on story submissions cn only work in a controlled fashion.

Vote/Read ratio 0.38% across all my stories ranging from 0.2% to 0.9% for individual stories.
Feedback is 15% of votes cast. (I Know... I like to track these things)

Nope, just the end of the year category awards like the stories. The poetry isn't eligible for the monthly contests or the seasonal ones that the stories have.

They often have their own challenges on the poetry board, though.

Ahh, end of the year award is what I was thinking then.

I agree -- and they've made this "occasional poet" feel quite welcome.

You just haven't been paying much attention. :D

Admitedly, poets are tougher on their critiques and votes, so the average rating is much lower than in stories, and it's difficult to tell apart trolls from legitimate votes. But we do our share of bitching from time to time. ;)

And then some, if I recall one memorable occasion when tempers got a wee bit out of hand. ;)

Well, I just entered a spoof of 'Twas The Night Before Christmas' for the Christmas Contest, and put it in Erotic Poetry, for categorizing.

If all the poetry contestants need to be - as I have been informed - over 750 words, that could be the rub.

I had to go nearly double the length of the poem I was spoofing, to reach the minimum.

The original matching length was better -- in humor, shorter is generally an improvement.

From the poetry side, it bore little resemblance to the original, except the cadence. I would certainly hate to face a serious poet and try to justify its existence.

I'm pretty sure that it would need to go into one of the story categories to be entered into the contest, Burly. Hence the reason for the lenght requirement.

Hm, unless rules have changed in the last couple of months, that can't be right...

Poetry submissions didn't use to be allowed to participate as such; only if they were submitted in a story category (for which they had to be, by definition, 750 words or more)

Well, I asked on the board if Poetry was elegible, and the concensus was yes, but must reach the same minimum length as the stories.

In any case, it could be stuffed into almost any category and qualify, except it isn't really erotic---just dirty. ;)

No, poetry is elegible only if it's disguised as a story and submitted in one of the regular categories. :rose:

Oh, that's definitely true. I'm not active on the Poetry Forum at all (as I have a tough enough time keeping up with just the AH), and I don't typically write much poetry.

Still, the dynamics are intriguing.

EDITED: It just seems to be perceived as "more" of an art form than story writing. Why is that?

That seems like more of a question for the story writers to me.

No, I think that most regulars of the poetry board put poetry and prose on about the same level of artistry. The thing is that while amongst the story-writers here we have all sort of people, from those who take their story-writing seriously to those who are proud to be wankers, over at the poetry board the wankers and the thin-skinned are outnumbered (or afraid to make themselves heard :D)

*waving hands in the air*

Hey, don't forget groupies whilst categorizing the denizens of the AH!

Yeah!

I don't think I'd want to be a poetical groupie.

Groupies are more into blank stares than blank verse.

I represent that remark
