Lately I have noticed this - for example one of my stories, which had 10 votes for a long time, suddenly had only 9. I just logged in now and it has 8, and my rating is adjusting accordingly but I'm really curious as to how my stories are getting unvoted. Anyone know?

Yeah, there are "sweeps" that remove illegitimate votes. A mystical system is used to decide if a vote is real or not - troll votes from people who haven't had the story up long enough to read it, or vote low just because they don't like the author (ie do it to all their stories), or duplicate votes from the same IP...
It's a pain isn't it? I've had a story with 10 votes that now has 6.

Yep. Same here. A couple had 12 or 10 and now have 7 and 6. Hell, I'm just glad someone took the time to read and vote at all.

There seems to be another problem. I noticed it with a story of mine posted today. It doesn't register hits. There are votes, but no hits. I know I clicked on it to see if it came out okay and some people have voted, but not one 'view' or hit. Odd.

The vote count is updated immediately, but the view count is only updated a couple of times a day.

Viewings of rejected stories?

The discussion about 'floating' votes reminded me to ask who gets to read rejected work? I have a piece that is rejected and it is up to 25 viewings.

Are there privileged members who get to read the rough stuff not able to be put onto the site?

Just curious

My guess is that those were staff members but I don't know how big the staff here is. It does seem like a high number, though, rejected or not. Some people have stories up who haven't had that many views! Odd.

I agree with Ella.

I'm pretty sure it's staff doing the viewing of rejected stories.

I had one story that was first rejected because I quoted too much of a song at the beginning of the story. I had to delete the quote and then resubmit.

I think that story had 8 or 10 views before it was finally accepted.

So I'd guess the higher the amount of views a rejected story has, the greater the debate in staff over accepting or rejecting the story.
**********

I feel it's actually good that they sweep the ratings. I've got one series where readers either love the story or hate it. So most my votes are either 5s or 0s. The Trolls hate my story so I see them coming back again and again, voting in their zeros, and posting their negative comments.

So sweeps have been good to me. Only thing that gets me, is people voting not because it's a good or bad story, but rather the ending isn't how they want it to be. Ah well, you either write a story how readers want, or you write the story how you want.

Votes are like elephants. Someplace (we haven't found out where yet) there is a Vote Burial Ground, just like the fabled Elephant Burial Ground. Unforturnately, votes seem to grow old for some reason and just go there to die.

Personally, I think it's in Cinncinatti.

Don't confuse views with reads.... each time a story is opened it's a view not necessarily a read.

So if the person checking the story opened the story and saw something they thought wasn't right that's one view.... they close it and go to another story.... later they open it again, second view, to make notes, close it and send it along to higher up.... Higher up opens it, third view..... and so on and so forth.....

Oh very odd. That's been in my sig for over a year and no one has ever asked me about it

I found that on Kevin Bloody Wilson's website a long time ago.[End-Jack]

Arguing over a rejection, OK or a Big Bad?

I can see that there may have been multiple openings of the file but 25 seems a bit extreme?

I got annoyed and haven't made any changes to the piece that's been rejected and it is just languishing, (I like that word, can you have a raspberry languish? Or is Languish what drunks speak?)

Sorry I am easily distracted!

Anyway, the rejection was for a horror story that the editors thought was too rough on the characters and maybe even snuff.

They assumed someone died when in fact they dissapeared. And I looked over some stuff in Non Consent that I felt was not just degrading but close to sick! so is there any appeal? Or do you just have to write it over until they say yes?

Day's da bosses.

I'd reread the FAQ and see if there isn't something no-no in the the story. They do have the upper hand, you know.

Send me a PM, and I'll whip you out my email addy. You can send it to me, and I'll scan it to see if I can determine what is triggering the rejection. There's a fine line you have to walk when you off ( or appear to ) a character - doubly so if any sex is involved in the process.

I've put some pretty horrific deaths, necessary to the story, through the queue without problem.

There' s more to it than what you've stated. The biggest problem is that the powers that be are completely silent on the subject of sweeps. I've tried in the past to get an answer, but have continually been met with a stoney silence.

I have a story that two months ago had 99 votes...every week it has lost votes, down to 96, 93, 89, 88, 85, and now down to 83. Seems like every time they do a sweep it loses a few more votes.

I have a couple of poems that now has more comments (from users, and not anon) than they have votes. The votes just keep evaporating...

Update...the story is now down to 81 votes...no new reads...

Dark My friend there is one thing I've noticed of late.... they seem to be doing different types of sweeps, like in one at a time as though they are testing things... they are even sweeping different areas one at a a time... I think as of late they are fine tuning things...

Just an observation, you understand....

I don't know what the hell they are doing...LOL...I just find it odd that a story that is not getting reads or votes is continually losing votes...over a period of 6 to 8 weeks it's now lost 19 votes....1 or 2 at a time...

Has the score gone up or down?

I have stuff that goes up and down by 1 or 2 votes every few days. I think some mad fan repeatedly reads and votes, then it is swept again.

The score has dropped by .01....the number of votes just continues to slowly drop...I could see if the number of votes increased and then dropped, but that's not the case...the story just continues to slowly lose 1 or 2 votes at a time.

Why don't they use something like SOL has?

SOL's voting system is no better, other than you have to be registered to vote.

The big problem over there is that the operator doesn't want to keep track of the votes for stories permanently, he deletes them after a period of time, plus the fact that he likes to try to tinker with the numbers...
