None of us write for ratings - at least I don't think so - but we all keep an eye on them anyway. I change the stories in my signature from time to time because I want people to read them, but I have to admit that scores often enter my selection.

I am more curious about how they work, and if they are monitored for abuse. I have seen some stories drop over twenty points after the first month. The most dramatic example was a lesbian story I wrote that dropped almost thirty points during the last 25% of votes cast. My math shows that the average rating of the last 25% of votes was an 8 point drop (a point being one-tenth) from the first 75% of votes.

Okay... maybe I am obsessed with votes, but I do have one question. Are there vote spammers out there? Why would they pick on a lesbian story?

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean someone is not out to get me.

Gotta go... they're coming... I can hear them... the voices... the voices... help!

They are known as TROLLS and they pick on everyone. Laurel, site owner will do a sweep of your story if you fill out the form, and ask her to sweep for 1's.

In this case, she will also remove a 5 with it. I am certain you will get more than a mouthful about the nature of a Troll. :D

Hi Erlikkhan,

Welcome to the world of the one-bombers! Also known as Trolls.

We all get hit, on a regular basis, particularly during competitions and also when (if) our stories hit the top lists. I've never been able to fathom quite why someone would feel the need to low-ball another's story, but it happens all too often.

If ever you have a supect vote on your story, and you think it is being targetted by such nasty behaviour, then click on the "report this story" link at the bottom of your story and send a message to Laurel about it. She's very good at fixing such things.

I find there's a general depression in vote averages after a certain legth of time, regardless.
