All conspiracy theories aside, some of you may be interested in the Volunteer Your PC program, which uses distributed computing to aid cancer research.

I've been participating for about a month through another site I frequent as part of a team of 2,500 people.

What drew my attention to it originally was an Anthrax cure study they were doing, but the entire concept is pretty interesting...

Hope it's stable - then I can just leave it running all night/weekend long.

I'm a power-saving nightmare.

Good cause; thanks for the link.

At first, I was gonna find Problem Child and donate him to scientific research...kinda like E.T..

It's incredibly stable. I have it on two desktops and a laptop. The cool thing is that it just hums along in the background, and sends results back whenever you happen to be connected.

I know of a couple of sites that have a competition going - different members make teams (the program supports it) and then the team with the most points for the month wins a prize from the site (free membership, goodies, etc.).

Also, United Devices credited all participants with one webmile for every 5,000 points, then donated 2.5 webmiles (equivalent to 2.5 million frequent flier miles) to Make A Wish

I think the two research programs going on currently involve Cancer and Alzheimers
