Hi!

first I want to give everyone who volunteers their time - KUDOS.

I have a question for anyone please. I used the volunteer editor for the first time and picked a new editor asking for feedback (figuring they wouldn't be as flooded by requests as established volunteers). I know I'm the impatient sort so I'm just asking time frame usually involved before you get feedback - its been about 5 days. Should I just ask someone else at this point?

thanks!:)

five to seven days is more than enough time for an initial response to a request for editing. (some editors apparently only check their mail once a week.)

Depending on how long your story is, how much editing is required, and how much free time the editor has, five days is barely enough time to actually edit a story. If the editor only has time on weekends to edit, then it might not be enough time to even get started on the editing.

The best way to find out what the holdup is, is to e-mail your editor and ask how long they expect to be -- that is if they've already agreed to edit your story.

One other point to consider -- e-mails sometimes get lost. If the editor doesn't acknowledge receiving your story, then ask about it.

Finally, if your editor doesn't communicate with you, then let Laurel Know about any problems you're having -- be specific about time frames, and who said what, when.

where do i sign up?

i'm new to this portion of the site but have read Lit stories for more than two years now.

I have excellent editing skills and would gladly volunteer to help. How do I make myself available for writers?

I submit my stories to a minimum of 3 different editors. (There is one who I use EVERY time - don't know if it's a female or male, but they are GREAT!) Out of 3, I usually hear back from at least 1. Sometimes, if I'm really uncertain about some things in the story, I'll submit to 4 editors - that usually means 2 will respond.

If I don't hear anything back within 5 days, I figure the editor got busy, was out of town, or something else came up. By using multiple editors, I stand a better chance that at least one will respond.

I started this with my first story, just to get as much feedback as possible. But when 2 of the 4 didn't respond, I decided that it was probably best to continue to use mulitple editors. Plus, different sets of eyes see different things, which is always a good thing!
