Andrea Yates as most you know is the Houston mother accused of drowning her 5 children in their family bath tub. My question is what is your position on this American tradedy do you blaim Mrs Yates soley or do you blaim the team of medical doctors who saw her over the last several years and did little help, or what is your position and opinion on this story???

I believe a major factor in the Yates case was the almost continous breeding.
Seems as though she was no more than through with a pregnancy then there she was in that the same position again.

This is an excellent example of why there should be certain eugenical safeguards in place.

Perhaps I'm being overly simplistic here however, would you let someone pilot an aircraft who had absolutely no idea how to?
would you allow someone to drive a semi-truck when they have had no training at all?

Persons with a history of serious mental illness have no business bringing children into this world that they cannot support.

As I'm to understand it this Yates had such a history.
When you add to that already questionable background the amazing stress and strain of caring for five small children, you are just asking for trouble.
I had read that the husbands mother had come to help out, I'm afraid I don't remember if she was living there or not, or if she just came by now and again.

It has always amazed me that circumstances such as these are never examined until the worst things happen.

An unstable mother with five young children, virtually no help, a husband and father who was absent for much of the day. I'm very suprised it did not happen sooner.

I'm not sure what sort of punishment I would support for her.
There has been talk of the death sentence or life imprisonment or life in a mental hospital.

I overheard on the TV today (I was doing dishes in the kitchen and the TV in the other room was on).. that her psychatrist told her to have baby number 5.. that it could possibly help her feel better.

I wish I could remember where I heard this.. anyone else know anything about it?

TV reports.

"I overheard on the TV today (I was doing dishes in the kitchen and the TV in the other room was on).. that her psychatrist told her to have baby number 5.. that it could possibly help her feel better. "

I heard a report on the news that some doctor told her " If you have another baby it will likely cause a psychosis" .

Why do we listen to these WANKERS?

Who is responsible for crime? The criminal, that's who.

There are always factors that contribute. But how many women suffer severe depression and manage to keep from killing their children? Most of them. While I feel bad for Mrs. Yates, I feel worse for her children. SHE was the mother. SHE betrayed them in the worst possible way. It was a choice she - and she alone - made. Expecting a doctor to look into a patient's eyes and somehow predict that a woman will kill her own children is ludicrous.

This isn't society's fault. This isn't the doctor's fault. This isn't the fault of her husband, her friends, or the mailman. She made a conscious decision to kill her own children. At any point, she could have stopped, picked up the phone, and called for someone to take her somewhere she could be helped. She chose not to do so. We should learn from her situation so that such a horrific crime can be circumvented in the future, but nothing changes the fact that she is to blame for her own actions. The moment we cease blaming doctors, movies, music, and television for every crime - and start putting the blame on the criminals themselves - will be a milestone.

My Opinion

I feel the blame lies mostly with Mrs. Yates as she and she alone committed these horrific crimes. But in the same breath I am furious at the medical community for allowing this to happen in the first place! They knew for years of her mental unstability and the fact that she would severe post partum depression yet no one did anything to me that is crazy!

I can honestly tell you after I had my last child Iwent through post partum depression so bad it lasted till my child was 9 months old! There were times where I literally wanted to harm my child! She had colic and kept me up all day and all night always crying which lit a spark on my depression! But I NEVER EVER would really harm my child. But looking back it absolutely terrifies me that at that time in my life I seriously considered it because the depression was so overwhelming! So on that account I can somewhat relate!

I think all in all alot of people not just Mrs Yates were to blame for these babies deaths! And they should rember that while they are sentencing her!
Just my opinion~

I agree with Laurel.

I heard one report that stated that she commited this crime "to punish herself for being a bad mother". What kind of rationalization is THAT???

It is my opinion that any person who could harm their child in ANY way (murder, abuse of any kind) is a seriously sick person. My child has done some seriously strange, weird, stupid, no-brainer stuff....and I've never, ever been tempted to hit/hurt him.

I would agree with Mrs. Yates being commited to a psychiatric institution. However, I think she should be incarcerated for LIFE; I do not believe that she should ever be released. If she were to be somehow miraculously "cured", then she should be put into a prison. Anyone capable of murdering children should not ever be allowed to return to society under any circumstances.

Yes

I agree with Laurel, but I'll go one step farther. Fry that Bitch to a golden brown. I'm so sick and tired of people not taking responsibility for their actions. Poor woman cries now when they talk about it. Too fuckin bad. She lives as her kids don't.

And how can a man like her husband stand by her? Don't tell me love, BS. This scum of the earth baby machine needs to be made an example of.

Human life has been reduced to God knows what to some people. If things don't just go right, thats ok....killem, and then cop a plea.

The whole thing makes me sick.

The upside?......maybe some scum bag will make a movie of it. It'll happen and money will be made from those children's death.

I agree with Tim!!!!!!

I don't think it matters to much why she did it, it is the fact that she did it.

This might not be the "right" thing to say, but if it had been the father that killed those 5 kids there would be no discussion over it, everyone would be so disgusted that would be begging for the death penalty.

Kill her. But do so very slowly. Maybe hold her under water till she almost drowns then revive her and repeat at least 4 more times .......

I really thought everyone would be for this poor wayward soul lost and sick and feeling sorry for her because she had a troubled childhood or somthing.......

Maybe the husband should be up on charges for child endargerment??

Theres enough blame to go around for all involved,But she is the one who drowned the kids........Her husband finished his testimony today, and I heard on the news that he looked at her and said I love you. If thats true then hes a sick sob too. Seems that in a lot of instances in America its ok to kill your kids, whether its Andrea Yates or some College girl who gives birth and tosses the baby in a dumpster,Most of these people serve very light sentenses. Yates will be put away for a long time probably forever. A women from Colorado who killed her kids and was found Not guilty by reason of insanity was recently released from a state hospital after Doctors determined that she was "ok"Kids have few rights and it appears that few care............
