My wife and I visited a used bookstore today. We have gone past this place many times in the past but today on a whim I pulled in.

Poking through the stacks my wife found a couple of books she was interested in and I found a total of five.

All of mine are Heinleins, ones that I didin't have in my collection.

The Puppet Masters
Starman Jones
Methuselah's Children
Beyond This Horizon
Assignment in Eternity

All with the original covers. The most I paid for one was $2.00. I was happy.

As we were getting ready to leave there my wife commented that she was getting hungry. Well so was I. I remembered a Bakery down the street so we motored down there and pulled in. What a surprise we got.

Empenadas at $1.00 each and Cuban Coffee at $1.00 a cup. We ordered two Empenadas each as well as a cup of coffee for each of us.

I had the Shredded Beef and Shredded Pork Empenads while my wife had the chicken and Ham and Spinach. Naturaly we shared a bit and found them all to be fantastic. The Coffee? Oh such Coffee. Thick and strong enough to melt a mule. For six bucks we had a feast.

As we walked out pulling on our coats and gloves I saw several younger guys standing around the bike. When they saw us they backed away and we saw what they had been up to. Hanging from the bottom of the bike was a Gremlin Bell and hanging from the bars were small Angel Bells. As we came closer one of them, the leader I suppose, stepped up and shook my hand before giving me an Embrazo. It turns out I know the guy, I took care of his mother in my hospital. He asked me what we were doing there and I told him and he started smiling. Before I knew what was happening he had sent one of his friends inside and they came out with a bag filled with more Empenadas.

Now my wife and I are accepted to this Cuban Bakery. Oh I'm thinking I'm going to be liking this.

So curious, what are gremlin and angel bells?
Gremlin bells ring as you ride, which drives the gremlins crazy. They have to hold on with one hand to do their dirty work, so when they let go to put their hands over their ears to stop the ringing they fall off. That way they can't destroy your bike.

Angel bells bring angels to your defense - so they can protect you while you ride.

Ahhhhh cool cool :D

Kinda like the load toad and the lil green army men

He likely wont be too welcome there once he fucks them over a misprinted price.

Somewhat like that, yes.

HEY CAT!!! I'm off work tomorrow. You guys coming to see me?

Just logged back in and saw this. Sorry about that.

Busy day today doing the little chores around the place and a bit of shopping. (Had to make breakfasts for the next few days. Bisquits and Gravy.)

Now I'm sitting here loving the fact the rain is cooling it off outside, which means it's finally cooling off inside.

Did they have a copy of Helter Skelter? I can't find mine.

I'm a Heinlein fan too (though I have reservations about his politics - great if you are bright, wealthy and aggressive, less good if you are disadvantaged - still good fantasies).

What do you think of Ben Bova?

Heinleins politics were different. Like so many people I like some of his ideas and dislike others.

Ben Bova had some interesting books, ones that I enjoyed and made me think.

Heinlein is fun - and his implicit beliefs that human-kind is unquenchable and that expansion into space is inevitable do attract me. On those lines, some months ago I attended an event where a Russian cosmonaut and space-program manager were there in person. That was interesting in its own right, but the really fascinating thing was the national space programme they outlined: starting with orbital solar power stations and following on from there via an orbital cable lift.

Bova seems to me to have an (at least somewhat) right-wing bias, but does put 'green' issues into global political context. His science does include current thinking like nano-technology, global warming and peak oil.

I do want a copy of "Farnham's Freehold" - simply because it is fun - but Bova's novels seem more relevant to the situation now.

If you ever find yourself in Butler, MO (birthplace of Heinlein), be sure to go to Coehn's (SP?) Bakery. It's owned & operated by a Mennonite family. If the season is right, they will have the best blackberry pie in the world.

I'll have to see what's going on. I know I'm supposed to be doing some Pipe Work under a guys trailer next week. I just have to find out when.

I dearly love used bookstores. On my side of town is one called Jerry's. I go to it as often as I can. It's run by this cool old guy who builds his own bookshelves and stays there until 11:00 if it suits him.

Used book stores rock. Lots of them near me. But I can't go into one unless I have already accomplished everything else I had planned for the day. Because, once inside, I'm there until they kick me out to close up the shop......Carney

There's one I go to at least once a month. I spend hours of time and lots of money. They have a cat as all good bookstores should. His name is Casper. I bring him cat toys each time I come.

One of the best used bookstores in the world-- Myopic, on Milwaukee av, Wicker Park Chicago. My kids grew up in that store.

My local used book store has just gone. :(

Probably for the same reason I closed my bookshop - eBay and other web-selling sites made secondhand bookshops unprofitable. The proprietors moved their stock on-line, found that the on-line trade was more than the trade through the shop, and then decided to cut the costs and inconvenience of opening a shop.
