Some recent posts have me curious (and I know we've discussed this before, but ideas morph/mature with the passage of time). If you could change Lit into YOUR vision of the perfect erotic writing site, what would it look like?

How would you implement a system to give readers assistance in selecting stories (ratings or otherwise)? How would you recognize and reward exceptional work?

Would the site be snooty? Would it be smutty? Would it still be free?

Share your Litopia, please.

Y'know -- in drafting this post, I realized that we (the authors), look at Lit as an "erotic writing site," and yet we're far outnumbered by those who view it as an "erotic reading site." So, as a corollary, how are your visions influenced by the audience?

I've been surfing around reading stories on this web site and have been inspired to submit my stories here. This is my very first post.

As a reader and potential author, what I would change is the navigation. Make it easier to get from the forum to the stories. I think it would be nice to have links to the story categories here in the forum and vice versa

Thanks, coochie ... and welcome to the AH.

I've actually found Lit to be one of the easier sites to navigate and best for feedback and emails from readers. Categorizing isn't something that is done at some of the other sites I've looked at to submit to, and not many allow public feed back. I've found Lit to be the elite when it comes to things like that. Ratings and voting are always going to be a problem. Especially during contest times.

I'd kind of like a better connection between author tools and the forums, mostly just to look at votes and stuff without going back to the main page.

and maybe a "watch list" so that when a favorite author has a new story come out, I get a notification of some sort.

That's about all I can think of save required topless av's for female authors ;)

I was just saying that it would be nice if you could click on at link to a story category from the message boards :)

That'd be nice.

What about quality? Would you be any more (or less) stringent on technicals (grammar/spelling/punctuation) or, possibly, other subjective measures of quality?

Hey Imp
Some type of quality control would be nice in the abstract, but I'm not sure how it could be iimplimented. I have seen some stories that were decent except for horrible punctuation and spelling. I'm not talking about the odd missed thing but overall and in quanitiy. To me there seems to be two problems with that:
First it would be extremely labbor intensive for Laural/Manu,, et.al to try to correct or proofread.
Two, as soon as someone began editorial editing of postings, how soon will subjective things like subject or point of view or 'quality of writing' follow? There is a broad spectrum for levels here and some of us are not as proficient as writers as others and it could easily close the door to us.

I would like to see the contest/story scoring system expanded somewhat. Not radical changes in rules but a 10 point system. It would perhaps change the close nature of current voting and perhaps ease some of the extremes.

I also believe the 'loving wives' cat should be split into at least three separate groups, i.e Cheating spouses, Swinging spouses and loving spouses. Presently all three are lumped together with much animosity between the 'camps'.

Better linkage between what is on the 'general story start page' and the discussion boards would be nice as well.

Who what its worth, IMHO.

I'd like it if there were a way to see voting history...like a graph, that showed the trend, historical high and low...not that I think it would tell me anything I don't already know...my latest just received the inevitable trolling after hitting the top ten. Like it's been said, voting will always have it's issues...

I'd like a one click way to enter my author page from the forums...and the watch list is a great idea...

I like the watch list idea. I also wish there were an easier way to add to favorites, like being able to click on a link at the bottom of a story if I want to add it to my list.
Subcategories would be great, too.

Boy, do I have ideas on this

One thing I'd like to see, and maybe with tags Lit is moving that way, is not having to associate a story with just one category. I want categories to go away entirely.

If i write a story where a virgin girl has sex for the first time with a mature guy, outside where a blow job is part of the foreplay, I want to be able to tag it as "First Time", "Mature", "Nature","MF","blow Job".

I should be able to then search by tags and date of submission so if I want to find all First Time, Nature stories written since Dec 1 2005, I can.

PC's, should actually be a thread of their own in a Forum for story discussion.

Stories should have links to like stories readers think might interest readers of this story. That would have to be moderated somehow; probably by the author of the first story being able to remove any entry they feel is not appropriate, and the author of each linked story being able to remove their entry. As part of an authors control page, they should be able to see those stories their stories have been linked.

Watch list is a good idea.

Voting, that is, story evaluation, needs a total revamp, and I'll save that for another time.

Okay -- but would you still have the Feedback Portal to show # comments left in past day/week/month?

Reminds me of the thing some online shops do: People who bought XXX also bought YYY. Interesting.

Granted my SQL/PHP coding is way weak but..... with the exisitng fvorite authors / favorite stories list then an XXX-> YYY could be generated, especially if teh tags are used more readily.

Blow-job/Mature/Firsttime with a 5 rating (or a 10) could be linked to any blow job or first time or mature (with gender flags) that a user indicates they like.

Dang, now I'm thinking database instead of smut.

Sure. but people could actually comment on each other's comments on a story. Who knows, your next story could help connect two people and make love happen. :)

I find myself doing that a lot here too. Damn, why did I ever learn PHP???

I agree with you totally. I thought the same thing.
