This has been bothering me since Christmas. What in the hell is a sugarplum, and do they cause hallucinogenic visions?

I could be wrong but originally, I think, it really was a type os small plum, rolled in crystal sugar... the big chunky kind, and hung on the tree at Christmas. The candlelight would twinkle on the sugar.

ENCYCLOPÆDIA BRITANNICA

sugarplum tree

(Lagunaria patersoni), plant of the mallow family (Malvaceae), native to Australia and
grown in warm temperate regions as an ornamental. Because of its shapely growth
and regularly spaced branches, it is sometimes grown along avenues. The tree grows
to about 15 m (50 feet) in height and has alternate oval or oblong leaves. The pale
pink flowers are about 6 cm (2.5 inches) across.

I had to look.

OK, so what is a warm climate tree doing in cold, Northern Hemisphere climates during the coldest time of the year? Maybe that's where the visions come in...dreaming of Australia?

Do they cause "visions"?

God, this is fun.

Gift Box of
Sugarplums

Price: $14.95
No matter what else is under the tree, a gift box of these incredible truffles will be greatly appreciated. Festive colored foils inspire exquisite anticipation of the unbelievably rich, dark Belgian chocolate within. The subtle plum aftertaste comes as a glorious, lip-smacking surprise. Eight oz. of sugarplums are freshly made in USA.

I am very confused now... this one is back to what I originally thought. Maybe I should stop.

Sugarplums are simply sugared plums. A popular Victorian Christmas treat. They have been around a long time. The sugaring technique is a pre-canning and freezing technique. The taste is quite sophisticated but still homey.

I am still looking... maybe if you hit yourself in the head with the trunk of the tree... bending over to put another gadget together for Santa it causes visions?
Or if you eat enough of them....

Sugarplum -- spam poison

What is Sugarplum?

Sugarplum is an automated spam-poisoner. Its purpose is to feed realistic and enticing, but
totally useless or hazardous data to wandering address harvesters such as EmailSiphon,
Cherry Picker, etc. The idea is to so contaminate spammers' databases as to require that
they be discarded, or at least that all data retrieved from your site (including actual email
addresses) be removed.

Sugarplum employs a combination of Apache's mod_rewrite URL rewriting rules and perl
code. It combines several anti-spambot tactics, includling fictitious (but RFC822-compliant)
email address poisoning, injection with the addresses of known spammers (let them all spam
each other), detection of so-called "stealth" spambots that masquerade as legitimate
browsers, and, optionally, the activation of firewalling or launch of denial-of-service attacks intended to crash the spambot's
machine, thus momentarily deferring the threat.

Sugarplum tries to be very difficult to detect automatically, leaving no signature characteristics in its output, and may be grafted
in at any point in a webserver's document tree, even passing itself off as a static HTML file. It can optionally operate
deterministically, producing the same output on many requests of the same URL, making it difficult to detect by comparison of
multiple HTTP requests.

If you use enough brandy in this one... maybe?

Sugarplums

Contributed By: Wiccadwoman

3 lb combined pitted dates, pulled figs, seeded raisins, currants
1/2 lb blanched walnuts or almonds
1/2 lb unsalted shelled pistachio nuts
1/2 lb crystallized ginger
grated rind of 2 oranges
3 tbsp lemon juice or brandy, as needed
confectioners sugar or granulated sugar

Chop combined fruits, nuts, ginger and rind through the coarsest blade of a meat
grinder. Add just enough lemon juice or brandy to enable mixture to stick together.
Shape into balls 1 inch to 1-1/2 inches in diameter. Roll in sugar before wrapping.

Nope. Just got thinking and wondering. And thanks to you... hungry. Lots of cool recipes I came across, looking for your wacky sugarplums.....
Pass the brandy...

Now I can't wait til Christmas. Thanks for the recipes, and the diversion.
