I recieved an email from 2 different lit members with gibberish in the body and attachments. I wonder if there is a virus circulating? I didn't open the attachments. One of the emails had something about a turtle in the subject line, I think. Anyone else receive one of these? If so, know if it's a virus?
Thanks, Curvy

W32.klez.gen...

...has been making the rounds here over the past 72 hours. Machines that are infected send out emails using outlook or outlook express (to all the owner's addresses) and use randomly generated subject lines to make you think it's legit.

You can go to www.symantec.com to find out what's hot and to look up viruses and, more important really, hoaxes. It's the hoaxes that talk you into deleting important files by telling you they are viruse. Very sneaky.

BTW you DO have an anti-virus program scanning your email? If not...naughty, naughty. Unptrotected cyber-sex--tsk tsk. ;)

I have had similar experiences. However i scann every night and it had always came up clean. Just do your virus scans. Im sure you have a virus scanner, anyone on the net without a virus scanner is either a fool or can be excused for not knowing much about computers.

A word of warning...

...scanning your system is, of course, an excellent idea. However, having a program that scans email as it arrives (norton does this if you tell it to) will nab the rascal before it infects the system. The scan will find it after it has infected the system and, possibly, has already done some naughty business. Because of flaws in outlook/outlook express there are some methods of infecting the machine that don't require you to open an attachment. I think they do this with normal html code but I don't really understand how this works.

Norton, and others, can do real time scanning but I find that it slows the sytem to a crawl so I compromise and run scans periodically.

better safe than sorry. Sorry cost me $150 the first time a virus fucked my system.

Anyone using outlook or outlook express is a fool and deserves what they will inevitably get.

How hard is it to use Yahoo mail and save yourself the security hazard? I have no sympathy for this sort of thing.

Virus scanners are a fucking waste of time, money and disk space. One I see no need for if there was any semblance of reasonable security in Windows.

And yes, I'm bitching. Deal with it.

Virus scanners are not a waste of time. I have detected about 30 viruses in my system in the last 6 months, all of which i managed to quarenteen and destroy with no hassale and no damage to programs. That saved me a LOT of many, the last thing you want is a computer tech charging you to fix a problem you could have nipped in the butt early with little hassle.

I agree to a point. I don't use outlook anymore, I did and I got the virus that is mentioned above.

Now it's all hotmail and angelfire email for me.

Couple of weeks ago, my sons laptop sent me a lovely email. Because it was my son I didn't think to not open the attachment.
The picture was pretty.. the computer, after opening the attachment, wasn't.

The virus you guys are talking about can cause alot of damage. My virus scan didn't pick it up, yes, my dat files are updated nightly and I scan all incoming emails. No it didn't pick this one up. I ended up reformating my computer. I didn't save anything because I had no idea where the virus (worm) had planted itself.

Virus scans are only good after the virus has been out for awhile

When I 1st got my computer, I had dial up AOL. So I never bother learning how to use OutLook Express. Now I have Roadrunner (cable) but still don't use it. I kepted my AOL for e-mail. I get sooo mush mail ... I didn't think using Hotmail as my main Addy would be a smart move for me.

I have a virus scan in my computer. 1st it was McAfee now I have Nortons. I have it on auto protect for the cable acct addies but it can't do the same for my AOL acct. I don't open unknow mail any more any ways. :D

Virus scanners are a waste of time, money and disk space. Why? Because they are not necessary. Microsoft could make them obsolete in a couple hours worth of programming adjustments. They don't do this because they know you'll put up with this crap, and also because it's become an entire damned industry.

I do not use a virus scanner. I don't even have one. Saved me lots of time, money and disk space. Then again, I don't use Windows, either. But I used to. I used to specialize in antivirus for businesses, actually. After doing that (and a few other things with MS products) for a while, I'll never use Windows again.

Bitch bitch bitch. I am starting to feel better though. lol

There are virii for all operating systems. The point is that of all OSs, only Windows and DOS let them propagate. In the others, they encounter real security and cannot reproduce.

I've had my computer for four years and have never had a virus problem. I'm extremely cautious about what I open and very rarely use Outlook for email. Most of my mail goes through hotmail and yahoo. I can only remember a handful of times that email to those addresses had a virus attached..

Last year about this time there was one circulating that had people deleting a file that was part of their operating system. It was not a virus per se, but had the same effect- it simply had the users do the dirty work for them.

Wasn't that the sulfbak one? You wouldn't believe the forwards I had from people in my class.
