I recieved this notice from my son's school and thought I would pass it along. It is an alert about two viruses.

YOUR CONTACT LIST !!
A new virus has just been discovered that has been
classified by Microsoft as the most destructive
ever! This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine has yet been developed. This virus simply destroys
Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its
functioning are stored.

This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title "A
Virtual Card for You." As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk.

Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York,
according to news broadcast by CNN. This alert was received, by an employee of Microsoft itself. So don't open any mails with
subject: "A Virtual Card for You." As soon as you get the mail, delete it.

Please pass this mail to all of your friends. Forward this to everyone in your address book. I would rather receive this 25 times than not at all.

Also: Intel announced that a new and very destructive virus was
discovered recently. If you receive an email called "An Internet Flower For You," : do not open it. Delete it right away! This virus
removes all dynamic link libraries (.dll files) from your computer.
Your computer will not be able to boot up !!

Sure, beware -

"Warnings" like this are usuallly hoaxes. Microsoft & Intel aren't the ones to issue such alarms. Each hoax claims that the alleged virus is the "worst ever." That's one clear sign in itself.

Beware of nimbda

I battling this fucker right now because MS is a bitch. Fuck MS- security is a bug to be fixed. We have to ask if security will become the new gig for them? So far, it hasn't been.

Its a hoax...

and

and

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/virtual.card.hoax.html

And... anytime you see something like "Please pass this mail to all of your friends. Forward this to everyone in your address book. I would rather receive this 25 times than not at all. " You can be 99.99999% sure that it is a hoax.

Please don't forward it to anyone and ask your friends, and the school not to forward it. The real damage done here is the slowing down of internet traffic by all the phony virus messages that people keep sending to each other.

However - the Nimda virus is real. http://www.literotica.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46617&highlight=nimda

There are many web sites where one can check the validity of virus scares. One of them is http://securityresponse.symantec.com/

To very little avail I keep telling friends and family to check the validity of these things before sending them on... but virtually no one listens to me...

This is no slam against you Isolde - its just a general rant - I think, especially these days, that people should make the effort to find these things out before adding to the worries we all have. Some of these viruses are actual terrorist attacks - lets get the real ones and try and put a stop to the proliferation of hoaxes.

And ESPECIALLY - your son's school... geez... you'd think they'd do a little research before scaring people.

Please ignore any messages regarding this hoax and do not pass on messages. Passing on messages about the hoax only serves to further propagate it.

And - print this out - bring it to your son's school and tell them FOR SHAME! It would have been very easy for them to check the validity of this - as it is for anyone.

But nimda is real...

I can assure you, professionally....

nimda is a biTch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell me about it... looks like we may be in similar professions... I've been doing nothing this week but taking care of this thing.

YES! If you mean nimbda, YES. These assholes did their work very well. VERY WELL because I have not been infected in the last 4 fucking years. Thank god for back-ups. I thought I might have to blister everything, but I think I caught it early- not thAT this means anythingt because it is fast.
