Virginia turning red by a 2:1 margin

well, I voted but I guess my one wasn't enough to turn the tide.

Next is Jersey. Didn't take long for the pendulum to swing

Virginia turning red by a 2:1 margin

At first I wasn't sure why this was in the BDSM Cafe, but now I understand: it's sadism! :D

I honest to god thought that said VAGINA.

Just fucking shoot me now lol.

Governors' races are always less party-focused, but regardless, I would like the Dems and Obama to be doing things differently. Still, the Republican party on the whole is still a disaster. I mean, really, I don't see how anyone can celebrate much of anything in politics these days, but whatever works for you.

McDonnell had history on his side in Virginia; It usually flips after a presidential election. He was able to hide his Pat Robertson roots and extreme past views (no birth control for married couples - WTF!!!? ) with a moderate veneer and great hair. He ran a disciplined campaign, and his opponent, an inept one. Plus, GOP base is just completely energized right now, and Dems kind of fat and happy.

Reasons for GOP to feel better, but longterm demographics of Virginia and the nation really favor the Democrats, especially if the social conservatives win the fight for control within the Republican party and kick out all the moderates. As has been happening for a decade.

Ten months ago they couldn't get elected as dogcatcher. Now they are running Blue Jersey.

and as my husband put it, "McDonnell had better ads." Which is sad, but true - lots of people just don't look below the surface.

The polls seemed empty, as well. I was the only one there when I went to vote, hope it wasn't like that all day.

NJ is a referendum on Corzine. I can't think why the good citizens would go with "that other asshole."

The polls closed at 7 in VA. The voters were the ppl WITH medicare already and no kids to drag to anything.

And how's that NY-23 strategy goin?

I disagree. The GOP can't even find it's own base.

They seem to think the fringe yahoos yelling a lot are a legitimate political tide. There are enough of them to fuck things up for everyone else, but the notion that we're center right is dead and over.

Math. I really really suck at it, but the GOP should try counting and percentages sometime.

I hope the GOP goes deep red fuck me silly no BC for married couples insane. Runs Bachmann.

Please. Let's bring it. It's working SO WELL.

I agree, nationally. But in Virginia, there were throngs of eager Republicans and gobs of yard signs and bumper stickers. It was easy to tell that it would be a rout, even without the polling. A huge contrast to last fall. Deeds just couldn't (or wouldn't) connect to the young Obama voters, who stayed home in droves.

Oh yeah. I agree. I think that there's going to be another story when the GOP polishes off Tim Pawlenty or something and sticks him down there in 2012. The people who mobilized then will again, it's likely. Remember the numbers of first time voters, and I don't mean YOUNG voters saying that.

STILL that 7pm poll close DOES matter, I maintain.

Yeah, we need to go the way of every other reasonable country and declare a national holiday for Election Day. Barring that, keep the polls open until at least 8 p.m. The way traffic is getting, and people's crazy lives, we need to make it as easy as possible.

Plus, there's always mail-in ballots, but I have my beefs with them.

Hell fire in Georgia they give you months to pre vote. I know people like my brother who voted for Obama but won't next time around. I see another Jimmy Carter.

One of my complaints with mail-in ballots is that they by nature make anything that happens in the last two weeks of the campaign irrelevant. Mail in your ballot, then find out your candidate boiled crates of adorable live puppies as a special campaign treat for big givers: too bad...you already voted!

That comparison is already egregiously ridiculous, but whatever. Yes, the worst politician ever lost to one of the best ever - Regan.

Who's playing Ronnie in this drama? Sarah Palin?

Gee, I wonder why the Democratic base stayed home in Virginia, instead of traipsing out to pull the lever for Creigh "I don’t think the public option is necessary in any plan…I would certainly consider opting out if that were available to Virginia" Deeds.

That's an actual quote. Jesus Christ.

The NJ race was all about local taxes and corruption. I hate to break this to you, WD, but yesterday's exit polls show 57% for Obama in that state. The comparable VA figure was 51% - which, keep in mind, registers his approval rating among people who actually showed up to vote.

The media is trying it's damndest to turn this into some kind of Clinton Era Republican Revolution.

Not even close.

H said his son told him after a Corzine handshake "I think I gotta wash up, ew."

I just realized I left out the part about Corzine being a Wall Street poster boy.

And yes, this is further proof that the mainstream media's loyalty lies with conflict and drama (real, feigned, and fabricated), rather than any alleged support for the left.

First D for that district since the Civil Fucking War.

This could actually be bad news for Democrats, though, if it discourages the rabid right from viciously attacking and ousting more Republican moderates. But somehow I don't think they'll be deterred.

It's easy to dismiss an antediluvian thesis, written decades ago, when you're running campaign ads with endorsements from your articulate and compelling daughter, the Iraq War veteran.

Hats off to McDonnell; he ran a great campaign. And Deeds deserved to lose, he really did.

I agree with your observation on demographics. Math is indeed math, as Netzach says. But with states like Alaska and Oklahoma having the same representation in the US Senate as California and New York, the legislative process is just frustrating as hell. I don't consider myself a "fat and happy" Dem at the moment, and don't personally know anyone who is.
