I've just finished (and submitted) my first piece of erotic fiction. Delighted with this, I then sent a copy of it to a friend of mine (warning him in advance of it's nature) for a quick opinion.

His response was a little surprising - and I paraphrase...

That was hardcore, and not traditional "erotica" at all! Don't misunderstand me, it was nicely done, but it was much too gratuitous to be classified under the terms "erotica". Applause and a cookie, but mind your genre.

This concerned me a little, so, wondering about exactly what tone I should be aiming for (my writing process involved coming up with a scenario and writing about it with no-holds barred), I read more of the stories available in the section I submitted to (anal). It seems that, perhaps, I may have been a little too graphic; too candid in my narrative. While I have read some very graphic descriptions of sexual encounter in the site, it seems that, generally, the tone is far more subdued than the one I used.

This prompts me to ask for advice. On a site that features sections for even the most wayward of sexual entertainments, can there exist such a thing as a tone that is "too hardcore", given the intention of erotica and the overall content of the site?

To abbreviate, can there be such a thing as "too far"?

Of course, I could be happy to formward my manuscript to anyone wishing to view it before reaching a conclusion specific to my writing style. I also now understand the process of inviting editors to view and comment ahead of submission. In my defence, I had just signed up to the Survivor series and was rearing to go, and I am new to this genre and hadn't questioned whether there would be limits in how far to push the envelope when describing carnal pleasures.

I thank you in advance for putting up with this newbie who has probably made a classic mistake!

No such thing as a mistake, as far as I am concerned, within the realm of writing erotica (or smut/stroke/flash fiction).

The majority of my own writing is very graphic. Some of it is also very brutal. Yet my stories remain highly voted and I still receive praise and positive comments on stories posted months ago.

If you read through some of the stories on this website, there are quite a few in which 'I shoved my thick, throbbing cock into her tiny, wet cunt.' and several also that read 'I moaned as I was joined with her, kissing her delicate mouth as our loins meshed.'

There is a reader for any kind of writing. Your friend is simply one voice, one opinion. Neither right nor wrong. Write what you want to write, and damn all the rest ;)

I don't think there is such a thing as "too hardcore". :D I describe my stories as being the dirtiest ones on the site, and I believe that to be so, at least in terms of pleasurable sex involving consenting adults. :nana:

Without having read your story, it sounds like your friend may have a very narrow definition of "erotica". It sounds like he was expecting the kind of story which, if published, Fabio might grace the cover.

Personally, that stuff puts me to sleep, and I'm certainly not alone on that. Then again, I'm not the target demographic for that kind of thing. Unless that's the type of story you were aiming for, you probably shouldn't worry about it. Don't worry about being too hardcore. Sex is hardcore. At least if it's done right.

If you wrote it with the kind of style and tone of the erotic stories that you yourself like to read, then chances are others will like it as well. I wouldn't worry about the opinion of one person who may very well a different view of what constitutes "erotica."

Ah-ha! I am thus enlightened!

I just hope my submission gets accepted now, so I can show you all what the fuss was about...

Looking forward to reading it.

Box and Slyc are right, there is really no limit on this site except a total ban on underage sex and bestiality - and a demand from readers for good grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Despite the site's name, the contents range from hardcore, top-quality, stroke porn - Boxy is a master, try reading him - to slushy, well-written, chick lit romance. Here you will find erotica, romance, porn, morality and lots of us trying to learn how to write a story that people enjoy reading.

As the man said, "Publish and be damned!"

If your story doesn't get accepted first time, I'm sure any of us here would be happy to lend a hand to help you out.

Thanks for the compliment, Elfy. I try to do my best. :D

She's right about the wide variety here. She's also right when she says that almost anybody will lend a hand, or ten fingers  to help; you with editing. I don't know of anybody who wouldn't but there might be some. :)

Xy

Given you a quick review on the AH new story thread to give a bit of publicity.

Between you and me, anyone who has a fetish about semicolons is a friend of mine.

I think your story is good, but a tad short. A Lit page is about 3,500 words long and is probably the right length for a short story.

I thought you jumped a bit too quickly from "they had been going out for three months" to anal sex. When I was nineteen I would have had too many hangups to let a boyfriend go there so soon.

Still, think you have real talent. Will read your second story tomorrow.

Congrats
