Views, votes, or rating?

What's most important to you, a story's rating, number of votes, or number of views? To me the number of views is the most important. What I care about the most is reaching as large an audience as possible. Let's face it, the overwhelming majority of viewers (most, but not all of whom, actually read the story, or at least skim it) don't vote. Unless you get a lot of votes, there's no way of knowing if the opinions of those who vote accurately reflects those of the ones who don't vote. Also, some people do manipulate the voting, or try to, at least. So you have to take a story's (or poem's) rating with somewhat of a grain of salt.

Personally, my most successful story on LE has been "My First Gangbang," in all three categories-- rating, numbver of votes, and number of views. My least successful has been "My Second Gangbang," with only about 2,000 views. I think that's because when it was first put on the site, in the new stories, it was buried from the start so far down the list that no one got to it.

Make Love, Not War!
:p

I appreciate votes, views and the ratings, but really what I like is receiving feedback, written feedback. It is much better at conveying personal opinions.

Feedback and fans are the best. When the same person writes you after each new story, it is a huge high.

Feedback

Written notes are best! Feedback, anon or personal.
(Of course I have yet to have someone send me a nasty note, whereas I've gotten lot of bad votes :( )

My kind of feedback

Yeah, I know what you mean. This is my favorite kind of feedback:

"Hey REDWAVE,

Just read your hot story, "My Second Gangbang." You sure are one hell of a nasty pervert. I wanna stick my dick in your mouth. I'm in Vegas on business-- call me at FUK-2469 if you want to wrap your lips around my cock and suck me dry.

HORSE"

:p

View vs. votes

I'm a little confused (not that uncommon). I've always thought that views were the total number of people looking at my story and the votes were a smaller subset of the total. But that can't be right. I've posted a story and I have 2 views (one of them is mine) and 10 votes. Does that mean the total of possible readers is 12? Or does it mean one viewer (not me) has voted 10 times?

The views are updated once a day and the votes are updated immediately. On a new story it is common to have more votes than views.

Feed Back

Votes are important.
Veiws are more important.

Feed Back is the MOST important. I'd love feed back - especially praise, adoration, and offers of publication or supplication .

I don't think I ask for too much.

Thanks Couture

Nice to know how it works.

Comment

Well, I guess it's unanimous: writers love feedback, especially positive feedback. And I'm no exception. But I also care a lot about how many people read me: i.e., number of views. The rating I don't really care about that much. But the more votes you get, the more any "aberrations" (shall we say?) tend to even out.

Written feedback. Even anonymous.

Okay, I was thrilled when I was #1 for a day. With only ten votes, I knew a good rating wouldn't last. I was just so happy that it could mean more readers.

Hard to go by views because you don't know if they made it past the first paragraph before searching for another story.

The number of votes is meaningless unless you have a high rating. I'd much prefer feedback saying why they voted my story a two, than just the vote.

Write me!! LOL ;)

Yes, what he said. That's my priority list also, although I'm happy to get negative feedback.

In fact, I'd be delighted if every person who gave me a "one" sent feedback telling me why. However, that would mean they'd have to read it before voting, which would probably limit the number of feedback emails. But, it'd still be a step up from the mystery of the major attacks my poetry's been suffering lately. Oh well, c'est la vie.

I love emails...........

But then again...I'm a writing fool anyway. But I enjoy getting emails, even the nasty bad ones. Though since most of those are anonymous, I never get a chance to respond.

But I'd have to "vote" for simple feedback in whatever form, including this format.

So if any of you are interested in giving Thesandman your two cents worth here.....feel free.

Masturbation Club-- sticky!

All right, Sandman dude, I read your story "Masturbation Club" (first one in the series). And here's my critique: it's well written, and the idea of a mutual JO session in public is kinky and unusual. But to me, the main character lacked depth. I gave it a 4.

I know your "Mrs. Steele" story is real popular, but it's awfully long. Can I just read the Cliff's Notes version?
:D

For a really hot, nasty story (with redeeming social and political significance too), check out "My Second Gangbang" at

Okay, what's up

Manu--

I had a work hit my highest ranking to date. It hit the list, and two minutes later, it's gone. It's rated 4.8.

Are there gremlins working in the network?

Thanks.

Peace,

daughter

Storm Front?

Hey, daughter, good to hear from ya. Was it "Urban Storm Front Ch. 1" (your new story) you're talkin' about? Probably someone attacked it by giving it a 1, and knocking it off the list. (It wasn't me, BTW).
;)

Anyway, I take it rating is the most important thing to you? You say you want feedback, but I get the feeling that what you really want is adulation. After all, it requires a pretty big ego to be an author-- any kind of author.
:D

I must admit you're a pretty good writer-- and I have a feeling you're a babe, too!
:p

RED....admitting

RED--

Oh, not quite. Let me clarify. I've been on the voting kick because I think it can be an avenue to getting feedback. There are thousands of posts here. If you're cruising and you don't have favorite authors or poets, what's an option? The Tops Lists. You check out who everyone else is reading. Well, poetry is read less frequently. But the ones on the Top lists have a little more exposure, and I'm thinking possibly attracting folks who will take time to comment.

The work in question wasn't hit with a low vote. It still has a rank of 4.8, but it is not listed on the Tops. It hit. Then two minutes later, it had been removed from the list entirely.

In terms of skill, I call myself a novice. I have some basic skills and I'm trying to hone them. In terms of experience, let's just say that I've gone to school longer than I'm going to admit and that my services are regularly employed to help others shine. :)

So what's up with my obsession with numbers? It's just that. If you don't mind me being frank, I am clinically diagnosed, manic. High functioning I might add. :)

Peace,

daughter

p.s. No, it wasn't Urban. Thanks for the feedback. Sent you an email. It was a poem.

Manic/depressive?

Sure, daughter, I like getting on toplists too. But you can't take that rating thing too seriously-- some people will give you a 1 just 'cause they don't like you, or they're in a bad mood, or they're malicious assholes by nature.
:(

In the relatively short time I've been on the site, I've seen it happen several times-- a story or poem hits the toplist with just 10 (or a little more) votes, then it quickly disappears. Why? Because someone attacked it, often for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the writing.

So wutya gonna do? Most people aren't assholes, but enough are to make problems for the rest of us.
:)

O, yeah-- Make Love, Not War (it's a lot of more fun, and it's a lot easier to clean up afterwards)!
:p

P.S.-- Ever read "Clans of the Alphane Moon" by Philip K. Dick? The main character's wife thinks she's a Mane (a manic), but she turns out to be really a Dep (depressive).
Me? I'm a Pare (paranoid).
:D

I agree. You probably didn't see the edit on my post. This isn't a case of a low vote.

At any rate, like the ratings, my fixations come and go.

Question for you, do you think folks are offended when a speaker peppers her correspondence with dialect?

The more comfortable I am, I relax my diction. I wondered if some of my idoms are misinterpretted. My natural speech pattern is a mix. In Urban Storm Front, Zoe's diction is the same. In many ways she mirrors my experiences and lifestyle.

I have participated in a few discussions of when is dialect appropriate and how does a write effectively use it.

Another thread.

Peace,

daughter

Strange

Well, that's surely weird. But I dunno why you didn't just contact Laurel & Manu about it, instead of posting it here.

Anyway, now that I've got you engaged in a little cyber-conversation here, I notice you keep sliding away from the really interesting shit. Are you a babe? Got any pics for us (nude or otherwise)? And are you a Mane-- or really a Dep? (See the edit to my last post.)
:p

As for your question, well, shucks, y'all, I dunno. Dialect? You mean slang? Ya damn skippy, muhfuh, the one time be totally wack, get what I mean? Get yo skanky ass outta here, now!
:D

Offended? Hell, daughter, I don't really give a damn whether my writings offend someone or not, as long as they're read-- by lots of people. And you definitely got it right that stories get read a lot more than poems. That's why you're switching over to stories, no doubt. And there are some people-- rednecks, conservatives, woman-haters-- that I like to offend. I try to offend them; I pride myself on offending them; I go out of my way to offend them! Any questions, class?

Um being a redneck,I must object to this comment. Whatever did I do to make you think that rednecks were people to make fun of? Was it my spitting out the tobacco juice while I was visiting the boards,or having Bobbie Sue,my 2nd cousin on my mothers husbands side, make up most of my posts for me?

Was it the way I drive my monster truck, throwing my beer cans out of the window while I passed you on the road?

And to think,I hunted down your work and voted....guess I should've waited until I had someone to help me with the big words, huh?

:D

Just in case its not clear, this was a joke......;) Though I really am a redneck.

Offend no! Impale yes!

Gosh, honey, if you look anything like your picture there, the last thing I wanna do is offend you. Impale ya, maybe.
:p

Yeah, and that Bobby Sue is mighty good with her hands-- that's what all the boys say, especially the ones she's related to!
:D

Being from the South originally myself, I know where you're coming from there. And no-- I don't have any real problem with the laid back, good ole boy type of redneck. It's the mean, nasty, racist, sexist, homophobic ones!

Make Love, Not War, baby!

:p

Re: Offend no! Impale yes!

Oh my...you know about Bobbie Sue? We jus thought she wuz good to family......;)

Now about the impaling......:D

REDWAVE

I have two babies. And let the eldest tell it, it's disgusting to think her mother is sexually active. Ick. LOL

My sweetie thinks I'm sexy. And that makes me damn happy. No pic. Not photogenic. I think if you find real women without the benefit of surgery or airbrushing, yes I am attractive. I like how I look naked. Not half bad dressed either. Don't know the terms you referred to. You'll have to educate me, friend.

Of course, read my poetry. I'm all up in it! LOL You know, RED, people tell you everything you do and don't want to know about themselves. Problem is half the time we ain't listenin'. Paraphrasing Angelou.

What I'd rather be doing than watching stats is getting my groove on. Like many couples of the 21st century, distance, kids, jobs, every freakin' thing seems to keep me from getting some when I want it. ((sigh))

Hint: When I'm not here, you know why. hehehehehehe.

Peace,

d

p.s. Do I strike you as someone overly concerned about offending someone? REDWAVE, are you tryin' to start some shirt? :D
