***Heads up, ladies, and beware the dangers of all underwire bras contributing to breast cancer due to restricted lymph gland drainage.

Victoria's Secret: Formaldehyde in bras?

The secret is out for one of the world's most recognizable lingerie brands, according to a potential class action lawsuit in which consumers claim they've experienced very uncomfortable symptoms, like rashes, hives and permanent scarring from Victoria's Secret bras.

"I had the welts ... very red, hot to the touch, extremely inflamed, blistery. It itched profusely," said Roberta Ritter, who describes herself as a longtime Victoria's Secret shopper. "I couldn't sleep, waking up itching. "I was just utterly sick," she added.

Ritter, 37, filed a lawsuit against the company May 14 in relation to the Angels Secret Embrace and Very Sexy Extreme Me Push-Up bras she said she purchased. But the Ohio resident isn't alone in her complaint. Her lawyers said dozens of other women have contacted them with similar claims involving a number of the intimate brand's collections. Many seek to be a part of the potential class action lawsuit.

"I was floored. I thought, 'I have to come out with this. The can of worms has to be opened because it's not just me, it's other people as well,'" Ritter said.

The medical Web site medhelp.org also features numerous complaints against the underwear company.

"I, too, had an awful itchy, red splotchy rash from the Secret Embrace bras," one poster complained.

Victoria's Secret's Response

A Victoria's Secret spokesperson admitted the company had received direct complaints from customers, but added the bras remain on store shelves.

The company said it is investigating complaints and released a statement that said, "We are sorry that a small number of people have had an issue and we want to help them determine the cause.

"Customer safety and satisfaction are always our primary concerns and we take seriously any issues our customers may have with our products," the statement continued.

Moving Forward

The firm representing Ritter has done some investigating of its own. The firm said it purchased the same bra types named in the suit from Victoria's Secret and sent them to a lab. It said the bras tested positive for the chemical formaldehyde.

But, Victoria's Secret denied the accusation.

"We have strict quality controls around our products, and we do not use formaldehyde in our bras," the company said in a statement.

But Ritter's attorney said somehow the chemical is making its way into the bras.

"It may not be something that they're specifying to put in their bra, but somehow it's making its way into the manufacturing process because it was certainly present," said attorney Dawn Chmielewski of Climaco, Lefkowitz, Peca, Wilcox & Garofoli Co., L.P.A.

And though Ritter's bra has not been tested, she said her doctor diagnosed her with an allergic reaction that could have been caused by formaldehyde.

"It's not something you think about every day when you grab your underclothes, when you put them on, but it's woken me up, and I just hope to wake people up to the reality that it can happen," she said.

The class action paperwork already has been filed, but a judge won't decide until May if enough evidence exists to move the case forward. Dozens of women are seeking compensation for medical bills and suffering as part of the claim.

This isn't the first time a consumer has sued Victoria's Secret. In June, a Los Angeles woman went after the retailer, claiming a thong malfunction injured her. She is seeking unspecified damages and the case has yet to be resolved.

God knows I don't have any worries on that account! Can't push up what ain't there in the first place!

I do think the thong lawsuit is bizarre. The size 10 chick was forcing on a pair of size 5 drawers that were so tight that a metal clip let loose and allegedly hit her in the eye. I'm just a bit light on sympathy for that one.

It is cancer causing so even a minute amount next to your lymph glands cannot be a good thing.

why on earth would they have formaldehyde in their bras?

edit: moderately worried because i'm wearing a victoria's secret nightie right now.

These are guesses;

1.) outsourcing without supervision, shades of China

2.) insidious plot to give women breast cancer to keep that industry growing and thriving

I fear the cancer industry more than any other these days. They put free radicals in the water, air, food, personal products, laundry soap, carpet and furniture upholstery, clothing... The list is endless. Chemical companies are the closest thing we have to an anti-Christ, IMO. Keep your eyes and ears alert and use organic everything.

Try reading Conscious Eating by Dr. Gabriel Cousins for a real eye-opener. Beware, you will never want to eat food chain chicken again and for good reason.

i've been suspicious of china ever since they put ghb in their child toy dye.

however, a 'cancer industry', sounds a bit paranoid. you get free radicals from interacting with oxygen, yo.

ummm, Allard, easy there hon.

1. Victoria Secret products are made in Jordan.

2. IMO, I don't think that the chemical industry is putting free radicals in everything to "get us". Are they often bad for the environment? Hell yeah. Stupid? Probably. Self centered entities. You bet. Out to get us? No. Not so much.

Formaldehyde is a natural by-product of the manufacture of foam rubber. That's why it shows up in the push-up style bras. This info brought to you courtesy of the microbiologist I live with.

"Aldehyde" is another word for boob. As in, "Those are some fine aldehydes you got there, baby."

So a bra is where you would expect to find formaldehyde. Unless, like me, you're just not interested in doing any more forming and buy much less fancy unmentionables.

Yeah, but what about those vicious VS exploding thongs? They sneak up on you (in more ways than one) and try to poke your eyes out! Huh? Huh? What about them?
(Not those scare me awfully much. I wear panties about as often as I wear bras, so no harm, no foul, IMO  )

No kidding? Huh! I always figured Aldehyde was what was on the outside of Aldes...

Aldese boobs have to somewhere to hide. Ergo, bras. Brassieres, to be technical. I'm not sure what the "sieres" adds to it.

Those BASTARDS!!! If we can't trust our lingerie suppliers, nothing is sacred.

I am paranoid about the chemicals getting everywhere without our knowledge and a inept FDA to protect us. I will freely admit it.

And in case you have not noticed, cancer is a huge industry in this country. The largest in the world I woud venture to say. Thanks to our unseen chemical companies slowly poisoning us.

And what better place to get that breast cancer rise than with the assistance (unknowingly or not) of a bra company. I am not accusing VS per se, but I trust no one regarding polyester fabrics. Accept only the naturals, like silks and cottons.

Deary, deary me. Cancer is a natural by-product of long life. That's why it's gotten so common. We're living longer. Be reassured but be watchful. And I like natural fibers, too!

Cancer is so prevalent now because we can detect it easier and people are not dying at 35 as often.
Have a look at old death records.

People used to die of fatigue, a cough, "a surfeit" (of what, I'd like to know ), old age; "body trouble"... all manner of things that could be symptoms of various cancers.

Have a look at this and check out the breast cancer numbers for yourself if you are so interested in telling me where I am wrong.

Breast cancer rates highest in North America

North America has the highest breast cancer rate in the world. While breast cancer remains one of the most common forms of cancer anywhere in the world, it is more common in the developed world, the United States in particular.

There are lots of theories as to why developed countries have higher rates of breast cancer. Most oncologists (cancer doctors) believe that cancer involves both genetic and environmental factors. It is possible that things in our high-tech world (air pollution, pesticides) contribute to breast cancer. Other experts claim that the Western lifestyle (obesity, lack of exercise) is the reason we have higher rates of breast cancer.

***The article goes on about how it is gettng better, less cases per year, like 3 or something, and survival is greater. So what. There is a reason why we have more breast cancer than anyone else in the world, folks. Wake up. And read the labels on everything.

There is a Dr. in Greensboro, NC that tells all her female patients to go braless to avoid the lymph gland restrictions. She thinks that is half the breast cancer problem. My wife went to her for several months and what she learned about other things saved her life. Dr. Vaughn is not a quack, just an MD tired of may traditional medicine failures. She specializes in Funtional Medicine
