Prologue
The gate was opening.
In the bowels of the mountain, the sounds of the demon's heavy footsteps echoed in Eve's heart. She looked over to Damien as he fought, fire-wreathed sword clashing with that of the Demon Queen's in a blaze of glory. Eve's mind was torn- her eyes darted between her battling husband and the ever-growing red swirl behind him. She could hear the demons from beyond that gate, lining up, taking formation and readying themselves to charge the moment the gate was stable. If Damien failed, if the Demon Queen took him down, the gate would open and all of their sacrifice would be for nothing.
"Eve, come on, you need to go!" Amity said from behind her, hooking one arm through Eve's and tugging.
"I can't leave him I -"
"You're just a distraction!" Amity snapped, cutting off Eve's protest before it was complete Eve's eyes widened in anger, but then her face froze, pain lancing through her, as she got an awful tightening in her stomach. "Eve? What is it?"
The pain was gone almost as quickly as it had arrived, but when Eve put her hand on her swollen abdomen she knew it was far from over. The two children within her womb writhed, kicking at her insides, showing off their strength.
"Oh shit!" Amity said, green eyes widening as she took Eve's crouched position and where her hand was resting.
Then a crash and a cry from behind them.
"DAMIEN!" Eve cried out, blonde hair streaming as she turned, watching as her husband fell to the ground. The sword of the Demon Queen was pointed at his throat, the blade obscured by a mist of swirling black fog. In that moment their eyes connected, chocolate meeting silver, and she saw the horror there. She was supposed to stay behind. She had promised she wouldn't follow them.
"Eve-" Amity began, stepping in front of Eve protectively. "RUN!"
But Eve couldn’t. She was frozen. Transfixed by the sight of her husband so close to his death.
"So you brought a little friend?" The Demon Queen hissed, her voice made up of all the cries of pain and suffering over the millennia since she was crowned.
"NO! EVE!" Damien reached out to her, hand trembling.
"PATHETIC FOOL!" The Demon Queen Bellowed, kicking Damien back with one strong cloven hoof. She tossed her horned head back, and eerie laughter cascaded from her lips. "Come here Pretty One- let me see you up close!"
The Demon Queen's talon-like fingers crooked towards Eve, summoning her. Eve felt Amity's hand tighten on her shoulder, but the pull from the Queen's summoning was strong, magnetic, utterly irresistible. The children within her squirmed as her stomach tightened again.
Not now, now now! Eve chanted in her head as the agony wracked through her. Her feet slid against the damp stone floor, the smell of sulphur and ash hitting her like a solid force.
"No! LEAVE HER ALONE!" Damien grunted as he struggled to get up. His tired grey eyes focused on Eve, his skin pale and limbs shaking with the effort to hold his head up, sweat plastering his black hair to his head.
"Oh my! It seems that big tough Rex Itineribus does have a weakness after all!" The Demon Queen chuckled as she tugged Eve ever onward.
Eve's pain passed as she reached the dias that Damien and the Demon Queen were fighting on. Her knees collided with the over-large step and she fell forward, hands flying out to catch her and protect her children from the impact. Damien gasped in horror and the Queen only chukled more.
The Queen delivered another kick to Damien's head, and he slammed back into the hard stone. Eve let out a cry of horror, and she heard the sound of running feet behind her. She managed to look over her shoulder to see Amity fleeing, the tail of her red cloak disappearing around a corner. When she turned back the Queen was upon her, her foul-smelling breath making Eve feel weak as her brimstone eyes burned her soul. Her taloned hand flashed down, fingers grasping the protrusion of Eve's stomach, nails digging in.
"Yet I wonder..." The Queen murmured, holding Eve in her claws as blood seeped through the expectant woman's black shirt. She stopped, waiting, considering...
"No!" Eve cried, reaching down and grasping the Demon's wrist. She yelped as her hand burned, tears streaming from her eyes as she was caught. Another tightening pain sucked her in, and her world melted away in pain and horror as a scream tore from her throat.
"Fili diaboli.... personam qui regnarurus."
The words sliced through Eve's horror and pain, cleaved through her soul, taking root deep within her like a curse. She felt one of the babies move within, causing more agony from her contracted body.Child of the Devil... The One who will rule.
"NEVER!"
Came Damien's strangled cry. Just then the tip of a sword exploded from between the Demon Queen's breasts. Her grip on Eve's belly relaxed enough for Eve to step back. But before Eve could do anything more, the Queen turned, one strong arm swiping behind her, sending Damien sliding to the floor. She stalked towards him, reaching over her shoulders and pulling the sword from between them. In one swift movement she slashed down, severing Damien's head clean off and sending it rolling across the floor towards the portal.
"NOOOO!" Eve cried, leaping towards the Demon Queen in a stream of golden hair and brash foolishness. Their bodies collided and they tipped. The Queen's face contorted in shock as they tumbled.
The pounding of demon's feet from beyond the almost open portal was drowned out by the Queen's scream of rage. She tried to free herself from Eve's falling body but lost balance, stumbling back into the incomplete planar doorway. For one moment, the swirling light of the portal stopped, then a loud slurping sound filled the room. Sucking, devouring, it's hungry ether sucked the Demon Queen in hungrily.
Eve fell, her head colliding with the ancient stone of the portal brace, her body collapsing in a heap as her body began to shut down. Her eyes felt heavy, like lead, and all pain in her body disappeared. Her gaze drifted, meeting the dead steely gaze of her husband's severed head.
But they had succeeded.
They had won.
The portal snapped shut around the Demon Queen, setting the mountian Eve rumbling and shaking.
Eve's final breath sighed from her pink lips and the last thing she saw was Amity running towards her, leading a group of Hunters, tears streaming from her eyes.
