Vent thread for teachers

"Administration, other teachers, parents, students, want to knock one of them into next week, well here's your place to do so."

Sound familiar?

ok, i'm not a teacher... but i'm a parent of 4 children in the public school system

ok.. sorry.. i had to vent also

Hope you don't think i'm stealing your thread.. :)

No problem freakygurl. It sounds like you didn't attack the teacher just the problem. And if you'd like to come help in my class when we do projects, you're welcome at any time.

As for your child and the scissors, what is it about 5 and 6 year olds and cutting their clothes. I had a little girl last year who would cut her shoelaces whenever she got access to a pair of scissors. We guarded her the best we could after the second time, but she got to three more pair before Mom finally laid down the law and refused to buy more. After a couple of blisters from her shoes not fitting properly with no laces, she stopped the cutting.

Of course, she moved on to bigger and better things (in her mind at least).

Sure does. And I meant it. There are two parents of my students that I could chearfully clobber right now. (I'm not a violent person, but the thought is nice.)

You don't like it, too bad. Until you have the nerve to use your registered name, your opinion means less than nothing.

OMG i forgot this part to.. my daughter got her progress report the other day (they get them every month) it said "Could you please LIMIT the amount of reading you allow her to do at home, because she is getting to far ahead. The rest of the class can't learn when she is so far ahead. Kimber seems to be much further, and likes it to be known that she already knows the things i'm trying to teach. She is making the other children feel stupid."

Ok. i'll admit, my daughter is bright. But she was basicly raised by my mother for the first three years of her life (mom babysat while i was finishing up my nurses degree) and wasn't around anyone but a bunch of old women who did nothing but "teach" this child. She is an "only" child (in the sense that all of other kids live with their other parents). She tends to get bored, so i teach her instead of letting her watch tv. She spends an hour a day on the comp, and plays cards or reads for an hour before bed. She is a good kid, doesn't cause alot of trouble (when alone) ;)

I can't imagine what this teacher must do to the kids who she has to actually "work" with. I know of two kids in her class that can't even write their name, let alone read at a 4th grade level. (yes, that is what Kimber reads at. I had her tested last week)

Do you guys, as teachers, think my daughter reading at such a high level is a "bad" thing? *just a note* my 14 year old son, is reading at college level and doing college math, he is a freshman in high school. my 12 year old daughter is at the same level as her older brother and in 7th grade. and my 11 year old son who is in 6th grade reads at about 8th grade level and is a genious in math. (he finished all of his high school math credits last year)
So as you can see.. all my kids are like that *another note* i'm not bragging, just giving some history of my kids.

I jokingly told the teacher, that if Kimber came home with one more pair of pants or another shirt cut up.. she would go to school naked. That didn't go over very well.

Like i'd send her naked.. christ this woman has me pissed off..

You just convinced me that she's not a teacher.

I agree with this. And FG, there's nothing wrong with your daughter reading above-level, as long as you're not pushing her and that it's something she WANTS to do. I was way above reading level throughout school and look at me- I turned out fine!

one really bad thing about her being able to read.. i have to keep closing my browser when she is around.. :D

she said outloud "mommy, what is Li-Lit-Litero-Literotica?" My mom (she's 61, and so frigid. I'm still trying to figure out how she had three kids:D ) said "What in the world are you doing on the net?" I said "Kimber, it's a message board i go to and Mom it's none of your business. It's my computer and i pay the bill for net service, i can do as i please"

So instead of just minimizing the window when i'm out of the room, i have to close it.. ;)

yeah I get to vent!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had such a disapointing day today. I have a second grade student who has already stayed back in kindergarten. She is unable to pass a pre K basic sight word list. Her twin brother is in another class and has the same problem. Anyway.............. it took weeks to get her mom in. She finally came in today. She won't let either child recieve any special ed. services. The one child has already been tested and was recommend self contained. Mom won't sign. These poor kids are going to suffer. I feel so bad. What can I do?????

If this post was from someone else I would have throught it a joke. Gotta be right? You need to talk to this teacher's principal.

Limit reading at home? Insert a whole bunch of naughty words that are not appropriate in this answer here.

What a wonderful thing that you, a parent, actually care about your child's education. Don't limit the reading, encourage it. While the other kids flip burgers the rest of their lives yours could rise to the top, even become a teacher ;) .

Seriously you need to go up the ladder. Start with the principal, if he/she blows you off, keep going up. This teacher needs serious help. No this teacher needs a new job.

Peace.

How about this. Our 1st quarter ends tomorrow. I got a new student in class today who has not been in school so far this year. I will be expected to give this student a grade. HA HA HA!

Tomorrow is Friday, Monday and Tuesday are teacher workdays, and I am taking them both off. HA!:p

Her name is on my bubble sheets for report cards. She has been in school two days and I have to give her a grade. I can't give an incomplete, my principal will not accept incompletes. Give them an 'F' if they haven't finished everything.

I did take Monday and Tuesday off. If you think a four day weekend is going to make up for every thing else we put up with, you are not a teacher.

Hope all you teachers are having a good weekend.

(Especially you schoolteacher, think of the rest of us on Mon and Tues.)

Thanks, MG. I'm having an ok weekend, except for a sore throat I can't seem to shake (all those germs in my classroom, and the damn windows don't open!) Hope your s is good as well. Schoolteacher, also hope that your weekend is fun or at least relaxing- you seem to have it the hardest out of all the teachers on this site.

Thanks.

Yeah I gotta shitty job. But I know I could leave it. I keep going back year after year. Something about the kids I guess.

Why is it the kids never stay home when they are sick anymore? I heard somewhere recently that teachers have more trouble with their immune system than others, due to the germs and gunk we get everyday.

I will think of all of my friends when I get out of bed late tomorrow. :p

Hell I only have two weeks of school, or 7 days at work left until the new year. 3 this week, and 4 next week. Tuesday next week I spend most of my day at the doctor. Then Nov. 6, and 7:30 in the morning I get my right hip replaced. No more school until at least Jan. 2. The only thing good about the whole deal is missing all that work.

I had my left hip replaced last June. So I am kinda stressed knowing the pain I have to look forward to. I will be off the board until I am off the serious pain medication. Wonderful stuff. Doesn't do a lot for the pain, but you just don't give a shit about it.

So I am going to try my best to enjoy these two days off while I can.

Do I sound like I am rambling? I do don't I? Stop it! My mother in-law has only been here three days and I have lost my mind. Damn.

Love ya'll.

Sorry but I gotta do this.

It is 9:19 in the morning. My in-laws have left. :)

I am at HOME. Having a nice day off....

Back to the grind tomorrow. Which reminds me I had better get my report card sheets ready.

Lilminx, dug this up, sounds like you need it too.

Rhetorical question here. Actually, I doubt anyone can give me a satisfactory answer.

Why the hell would anyone send their five year old to school in a pair of pants with NO button? I know they weren't rushing out the door to get to school on time, she was late just like every other day for the past two weeks (and most of the two months before that).

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I love my students, but their parents are giving me gray hair.

Morninggirl,
Thanks for digging this up. Aside from having personal family problems, work has been really fucking stressful this week. To answer your rhetorical question with another rhetorical (ok, well a few) one:
Why do parents send their kids to school in dirty clothes? Hungry? Without their homework done? With shoelaces that aren't made to be kept tied? In clothes that aren't appropriate for the weather? I've seen all of these this year.... :(

As for my week at work, well...
I'm a special ed teacher. I know that many people have no clue that children who receive special services have something called an Individual Education Program (IEP). This is a form that is AT LEAST 13 pages long, often more, if the child receives speech, counseling, or any other services. IEP's are legal documents that have to be updated every year in a meeting with the child's parent. Every marking period, the goals for the child (they're part fo the form) have to go home with the report card, with notes of progress towards that goal.

Well, I'm trying to get all of the page 6's together (some of my kids have 8 pages just of page 6!) and the teacher (and administrators)who did their IEPs last year fucked them up big time!!! Now, not only am I trying to get their report cards done, but I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to fix all of their IEPs. I HATE incompetence and apathy.

I know about IEP's from my end of the spectrum only. I have had two students who received some services and had to sit in on all their IEP meetings.

I feel for you. Writing those objectives would drive me completely batty.

My frustration now is with parents and our counselor. I've filled out every form she's given me for this child and it's a month later and nothing has happened. I'm almost to the point of calling DFCS annonymous tip line myself.

I've managed to deal with the hungry part in my room this year. All of my students but 2 get free lunch so they also get breakfast when they get to school. If they miss breakfast and are truly hungry, our principal will allow them to have breakfast with the Pre-K classes at 8:30 (an hour after school starts). After one experience with this, one of my students was upset, he didn't want to be with the "babies" so I have a pack of Peanut Butter Crackers in my filing cabinet. WalMart had packages with 8 packs of crackers for less than $2. I explained that the crackers were there and the kids could have them if they missed breakfast and were too hungry to wait for lunch. It's been amazing but none of the kids have abused the crackers at all. I've restocked twice, but I'm perpetually missing breakfast myself and grabbing a pack.

The rest of your questions, I'm dealing with much too often.

teachers are great.i never really thought about it when i was in school.i always had trouble in school.

aughhhhhhhhh this is my 1st year. I really never expected all this stress! I just got a new student. She is supposed to be in 3rd grade and she can not spell her own last name These poor kids. Dyfs comes to pick her up to see mommy. I feel bad for them.
