My wife used to live in Venice. Once a year we go there to visit friends and enjoy the sedate life for a weekend.

Local people on a traghetto -- a gondola which ferries you across the canal for 50 cents. Male passengers always stand in them , and most of the women do too. I almost fell in when I tried maintain my balance, but kept my decorum, and hopefully managed to pass off as a drunken local rather than a drunken tourist.
