Remember how Republicans whine we shouldn't force companies to pay their employees more? Remember how Republicans say the government shouldn't interfere with company operations? Congratulations, the con artist just did both.
Provisions aimed at ensuring more cars and auto parts are made in North America -- especially the U.S. -- will force some manufacturers to change their pattern of manufacturing, which could prove costly.
First, any car manufacturer who doesn't pay their employees at least $16/hour by 2020 would face a 2.5 percent tariff.
Second, vehicles must have at least 75 percent of their components manufactured in the U.S., Mexico or Canada to qualify for zero tariffs. Failure to do so will incur a 2.5 percent tariff.
So how does this affect your purchase? Ford, which makes many of its vehicles in Mexico, may decide to simply take the 2.5 percent hit and pass along the cost to you. For example, the Ford Flex could have an additional $1,100 added to the cost of its most expensive version because of the tariff.
Also, instead of giving you the works when you buy a vehicle, manufacturers may force you to buy the options you want. Buying piecemeal will raise the cost of your purchase.
Congratulations to the con artist for once again making things more expensive while claiming he's a great businessman. When you go to buy your next new car, don't complain about sticker shock to the dealer. They're only doing what the government told them to do.
