Researching them I read the following:

"Vasectomy is not immediately effective. Sperm remains in the system beyond the blocked tubes. You must use other birth control until the sperm are used up. It usually takes from 15-20 ejaculations."

And thought - 'okay, in other words, about 3-5 days of my normal self-abuse, and I should be shooting blanks'

The standard of 15 - 20 ejaculations seems odd to me.

A man I worked with had a vasectomy and he said his balls ached for a few days. At times rather painfully. Lets just say he wasnt banging his wife 5 times a day during that time.

As I understand, sperm only live a few days. I would think that all the sperm in the system would be dead long before 15 or 20 sessions with a partner.

Well, that is what the sites said - they also state that you take in ejaculate samples periodically until they are sure none of those little beggars are still alive.

Sperm live only a few days outside the man's body, but their lifespan with the urinary tract is much longer. It takes 9 weeks from the beginning of development until the sperm reaches maturity and then the sperm can live a good bit longer. Still, for all intents and purposes, 15-20 ejaculations should be enough to get rid of the residual sperm hanging around, but when I went through a urology rotation we were taught to advise patients to use another form of birth control for approximately one month post-op just to be safe.

i am not sure how long sperm lives in the system, i thought it was like 30 days type of thing, but i do know that sperm checks were done after 6 weeks, and you are told to have a lot of sex, either solo or with a partner.
