randomly thinking as i come up with ideas for the characters in one of my WIPs

it feels like straight men being into 'barely legal' girls and the power dynamic that comes with it seems to be a super duper common interest
but it feels like straight women being into 'barely legal' guys would be considered weird?

given that the audience i write for is probably mostly straight men, would my idea for having the guys in my WIP be 'barely legal' be a turnoff? o_O

Well, barely legal guys hitting on older women seems pretty normal, so I guess.

If you have a story to tell, write it. Stop worrying about other people's expectations.

The POV character in my story is 18 and the girl he gets involved with is 20. I didn't give their ages very much thought, and I've got no idea whether it was relevant to the readers. All I was concerned about is that everyone was 18+.

Decide what story you want to write and tell it. Older men, younger women works for some people. So do older women, younger men- I think those are called cougar stories. Small age gaps are common too.

She's barely beyond barely legal herself. Still, at that age they're both still in the mindset that a couple of years is a long time. He's probably going to be slightly intimidated by the older woman, and will have to overcome her inclination to look at him as 'just a kid'.

The average reader on here is long past the age of thinking that 3 years is a long time. They're going to view them as essentially the same age. So that dynamic is largely irrelevant as far as reader perceptions go. It's going to be neither a boon nor a bane. There's no stigma or kink attached to such similar ages. Anything the difference in age delivers will have to come from the narrative, not the numbers.

My bread and butter is older women hooking up with young guys. It actually "sells" better than older men with younger women on Lit in my experience.

interesting point
the guys in this case are very dominant and the girl submits to them eagerly, so i feel like she thinks they are older than her by a few years, and would be surprised when she finds out they're actually not only a few years younger than her but in fact just 18
i guess that's what i'm "going for" kinda?

The milf/cougar genre is huge so I don't think that older women with young guys is weird, its a big category here and in video porn.

There's also a significant market for the couples seeking teens type vids where an older couple seduce their daughter's friends or other girls that age.

And the classic baby sitter trope isn't just about the father banging her, but often the mother and father being involved

Age difference isn't just a trope, its a staple and for both genders.
