Vanishing votes

Hi all,

I've written a couple stories; they've been posted for a while and people have been voting on them. The weird thing is that recently the total number of votes has decreased. Does anyone know why this happens? Do votes go stale? Can people retract votes? (I don't really mind, because as it happens, the bad votes seem to be the ones disappearing, but I'm still somewhat confused)

I'm sure...it's been discussed, bitched about, here often enough so it would seem that other forums would have an equal number of threads.

Thanks for letting me know; I couldn't find the answer anywhere in the FAQ. I suppose that I might have managed to find the answer in the author's hangout by myself, but when I searched it under "vote" it still came up with 20 pages of threads, most of which were entirely unrelated. I had been under the innocent impression that it was impossible to vote twice from the same IP address (Therefore eliminating any need for sweeps).

Oh, and it's HE by the way and yes I do have enough answers, thanks.

It's no biggie, darlin'. But we just had a thread in here the day before yesterday asking the exact same thing, and we have at least one thread every couple of weeks with the same question - more often if the threads from the story feedback forum are included.
