Vanishing scroll bar

I've never had this happen before. Was trying to submit a new story. I always copy and paste it here, then read through it again. I found two mistakes near the bottom. I corrected them. But then? I clicked on something accidentally (I think, not sure) and the scroll bar on the right went away. I had no way to scroll down.

I closed the browser, went back to the draft and scrolled down to make sure that the changes were actually there. Yes. Good. But.. I repeated whatever I did prior and no scroll bar again. Gah!

I had to close the browser and reopen for the scroll bar to appear again. Weird.

Yeah, I've been having that (submitted 10 chapters in the last couple weeks). Usually hitting Refresh sorts it out. If it happens on the main submission page I can zoom out enough to see the Preview and Submit button, but on the Edit Draft page I just have to reload or edit my text in the word processor and past it in again.

Thanks! I was afraid to hit refresh. Not sure why.

I hit F5 and the scroll bar is back.

Good to know. I was having the same trouble, i reported it as a bug, which it is. I would just click on My Works and then go to the drafts tab. The story is saved as a draft until you hit the submit button. But F5 is much quicker. ;)

Thanks for the reports. :D

Can someone post a screenshot of the missing scrollbar?

There is a full screen editor which you can launch by clicking the icon with two arrows, but not sure if that's related to this issue?

Also, does this only happen in one browser or in all browsers?

Hopefully I can track it down and fix the issue with your help.

:D

I'm no good at screenshots. I'm using an older version of Chrome. Haven't tried any others.

I hope this is it. I've have taken a screenshot but the screenshot sometimes shows the scroll bar that isn't there on the monitor.

I am using Firefox.

It's happened for me on up to date Microsoft Edge, whether the window is full screen or not.

Thank you!

This is the Preview screen, right?

Does that mean that this happens on both the submission page (with the text form field for the main story text) and also on the Preview Story page?

What did you do before the scrollbar disappears? I have been trying over and over again in several browsers (including Firefox and Chrome) and I can't make it disappear. I must be doing something wrong. Any advice to trigger the scrollbars?

Thank you again for the screenshot. :D

It happens when you click the double arrow in the upper right hand corner of the edit box on the submission form.

I copy and paste the text into the small box on the submission form. I then fill in the other details and hit Preview.

A few lines of text appear in the small box. I hit the down arrow in that box and the view switches to full screen and I assume ALL the text to the end. I can only see the first screen - but without a scroll bar on the right until I hit F5.

After I have hit F5 the total text appears with the scroll bar.

That is expected, there should only be a scrollbar in the text field on the clean editor screen. But the screenshot shows the left menu of the Control Panel and that shouldn't be showing when you are in the clean editor screen. I think there an issue here since several Lit authors are reporting it, I just can't figure out how to track it down yet. :D

Let me go through this step by step, because it doesn't seem to work the same for me.

First, I'm on the main story editing page.

I fill out all of the fields, including pasting a large block of text into the box that says:
Story Text

If I click the button that says:
Preview & Publish
I am sent to another screen that shows the full story with formatting (bold, italics, etc.).

After you click the Preview & Publish button, you see a small box of text, not a full screen of text?

Doesn't the screenshot show the Preview & Publish page with all of the text formatting and the full story text?

I am not able to reproduce the small text box after clicking Preview & Publish.

Sorry to ask you so much, but can you explain that further so I can make sure I'm doing exactly the same thing you are?

Yes.

No. Only what will fit on one screen. I can't scroll down to see the rest. The screenshot shows the totality of what I can see, not the thousands of words afterwards.

Tried again. As Screen shot with info to left but scroll bar appeared.

Hmm... now I can't reproduce the problem. I am using a different browser now. I use to use chrome but now I use Brave.

Just tried again in Chrome... still couldn't reproduce the problem.

*scratches head in wonder*

I've had it happen once when I accidentally hit the button to bring up the full-screen editor. It's been long enough ago that I don't remember more than that.

I can't even remember which pen name ( and therefore which browser ) it happened to. Odds are it was RR, because Les hasn't put out much and Dark has put out nothing in a while, and that would mean latest version of Chrome.

In my experience, anything that changes the view of a page, frame, or other container without refreshing it is prone to wonkiness that is difficult to reproduce and frustrating as hell to remedy. Typically, you can just refresh, but when you're dealing with large amounts of entered data that hasn't yet been saved to the database, that's a dicey proposition.

If it was me, I wouldn't allow switching on the fly. I would only allow a choice of standard or full-screen from the get-go. No changing your mind until after it's been saved to the database. The amount of text you can lose if something goes wrong is soul-shattering. It's just not worth the risk.

I always save the document before using copy and paste. If something goes wrong? I've lost nothing.

So do I, but my guess is that most people who would use the full-screen editor are doing it because they're writing in the window. That's where the potential for screams of anguish comes from.

I have just submitted a fourth story to Summer Lovin. The scroll bar appeared the first time.
